kitten eating question

My wife and I recently got a second cat. He is a 3 month old kitten.
We noticed that his stool is very "thin", doesn't hold form and has very
foul smell. He eats only dry food for kittens.

Will this get better as he gets older? Should we change his dry food?

Thank You,

Michal

Try a better quality food from a pet store.

Whatever you feed him now will be what he will only want to eat in the future,
as what a cat eats the first 6 months of a cat's life will be most likely what
he will want to eat in the future.  With that being said, I would try feeding
him a high quality canned food (80% canned and 20% dry).  If you have a Whole
Foods Market in your area, they will carry the better brands of pet food.  I
would recommend adding a small amount of new food to the old food in the
beginning so he gets used to a new food.
Congrats on your new kitty :)

Unfortunately, most of the foods they carry haven't had feeding trials
conducted and are only appropriate for kittens.  (In this case, that would be
okay.)

If that's true, you dont' want to get him "hooked" on a food that is high in
phosphorus and calcium and isn't appropriate for adult and senior cats--foods
that are carried at Whole Foods Market, Wild Oats, etc....

I see you still obsessed with me, LOL.  You are such a liar.  You don't even
know what foods Whole Foods carries, or whether or not they've had feeding
trials.  So why don't you STFU.  To the OP, don't pay attention to Gaubster.
He's a regular troll here who is obsessed with me, and obsessed with Science
Diet food.  He'll knock any food that isn't Scie Die.

..and you have quite the potty mouth.  Shows your character and lack of class.
I checked out the pet foods at Whole Foods several weeks back and everything I
said above is abosolutely true.  You don't like the message, so you want to
slime the messenger.  How juvenile.

Did I bring up Science Diet anywhere in my post??  You are the one that is
obsessed with knocking Science Diet and Hill's Pet Nutrition.  You just proved
it!  Grow up.

I agree with other posters who suggest that you put your kitten on
better quality food than Purina.  Personally, I avoid foods with
by-products in them if at all possible.  I would also avoid any food
that doesn't list meat as the first ingrediant.  Nutro brand is one of
the few that meets my standards, and all of my cats like both the dry
and canned--Max Cat Chicken being their favorite dry food.

I would like to note that, despite the hefty price tags, not all of
the cat foods offered by Whole Foods Markets are of premium quality.
The Whole Foods I used to shop at offered good cat foods and
not-so-good cat foods.  Their cheapest line of canned food didn't have
any better ingrediants than regular grocery store cat food, but it
sure cost a *lot* more.

As with everything, you must read the ingrediant label to know what
you're really paying for!

That's right.  Here at our Whole Foods they carry Petguard, Newman's, Nature's
Variety and I think Wellness.  But there is a brand I can't remember the name -
maybe Lamb a Derm or Lick My Chops - that if I recall didn't look that good.

Reading the ingredient is not the best way to judge the quality of any food.
The ingredient label may "look good", but doesn't give *any* clue about the
quality of ingredients, nor the nutrient levels.  Excessive levels of
phosphorus, calcium, magnesium, etc. cannot be determined by looking at the
ingredient label.  Urinary pH ranges aren't disclosed on ingredient labels,
either.

Here's one example...Nutro products contain excessive levels of calcium and
phosphorus and acidify the cat's urine pH...sometimes unneccesarily low.
Kidney disease is a silent killer and one of the top causes of death in the
feline population.  If a cat is in sub-clinical renal failure, then feeding a
food high in phosphorus is only going to accelerate the condition.

He is very lively and doesn't seem to have any discomfort.
