I'm taking an animal behavior class right now, so I've been paying special
attention to my cat's behavior patterns. Cats are all so different! I think it
would be a fun experiment if people could pick one word to describe their cat
and post it here on the newsgroup. The trick is that you shouldn't read anybody
else's reply until you've picked a word. This will eliminate suggestion and
bias. I'm thinking/hoping that the words we pick will all be very different!

Have fun! My word will be in the next post.

Cristobel = Whineball

Is that a word?

Sort of like a furball but she whines when she doesn't want to be
picked up, touched, when I get home, when she wants to go out but
can't, etc.

Heh! My Gnarly did this. The long, very high-pitched "mmmmm
MMMMMMMMmmmmmmMMMMMMM" with the big "Ms" being even higher pitched. It was a
modified growl.

Buddha grunts and squeaks. I have honestly never seen another cat to this.
If she is in a mood I pick her up and she squeaks then makes noises like she
is being squeezed and continues until I put her down. She also snores softly
in her sleep like a very low moan. Hilarious.

Blaise - boyish (he is a little boy and he acts just like a little
boy)
       Collette - cautious

Collette makes this same kind of noise although it is lower in
pitch.
We have called it "grumbling". She also makes a "chuffing" sound
when I pick her up and snores in her sleep. She is calico so I don't
know if that makes a difference or not.

I've never had a cat who has done this before. It's kind of annoying
to hear like she's trying a guilt trip or something.

I do remember the shelter lady telling me that she cries when she was
put back in her cage. So maybe now she associates being picked up with
"being put back in the cage". Not that I have a cage in my apartment!
Cats! LOL!

She does have a variety of other pleasant sounds that she makes,
fortunately.

<G> Some of them can be such drama queens. Every time I went to get Gnarly
from the vet I could see the techs sweating and shaking because all you had
to do was look at her hard and she screamed.

Does she "mrrrp!" in greeting? Cheeky does that. She flies by and right when
she passes me makes this cheerful little sound that goes up at the end. And,
although Buddha grunts and squeaks when annoyed, Cheeks makes the tiniest
little, itsy bitsy high-pitched sound when I love on her and she is not in
the mood--I translate it as "oh, do you really HAVE to?" LOL!

I call this "chirping" -- it's the only sound I've ever heard Rosalie make,
and she's been living with me since March. She chirped when I first met her
-- she was in foster care at the time, and had never said a word to anyone
up to that point. We had an instant connection.

Wow, she is pretty. I followed many of the links to other cat photos and
read some of the bios--I bookmarked your site for reading later. You have a
real knack for capturing cats' personalities in photos! Garfunkle's kitten
pic just kills me, as does Bobbcats, and Isis is lovely. Flashlight, in the
second photo, has a smile that made me laugh! I liked her story, too. Great
cats site, thanks for putting it together and sharing.

Thank you -- I think so too. I am working on getting some more pictures

regular basis and need to get a photo.

Catster is amazing and addictive -- it's not my site, anyone can create a
page for their cat(s) on it -- Rosalie is the only cat I have so that's
the only page I can claim any credit for. The links are to other cats who
asked to be her friends. Also there's a link to my dog Zoe's Dogster
page.

too. I live in Raleigh, NC, by the way, and get to VA on a regular basis as

Rosalie loves that toy! When she first came to live with me and Zoe (the
dog), she was terrified of everything -- but I could lure her anywhere with
the Cat Charmer -- it was pretty funny -- obviously, the love of play
trumps fear every time!

If it come in after work it's more of a meow meow meow Mra (see post
on What Cats Call us).

She does do the mrrrrrrrrrrr if I am at home and just walking past or
if I touch her the way she likes to be touched. Or even if I pet her
while sleeping and she lifts her head up and says mrrrrrrrrr.

I do like the mrrrrrrrr sound.

Shauna makes the mmmmmrrrrrr sound when she runs about like a maniac
and climbs up in a split second on the very top of the window and when
she dashes about the window sill.  the windows are of course closed.

if the sound is what i think you are describing, the mother of our two males
would make it when they were kittens and she was looking for them
(we were foster caring for a shelter and took them in until some were
adopted).  our two males seem to do it now when they are looking for
us or each other.  it's very cute :).  it's like a "rolling R" sound that
gets quickly higher in pitch like it's a question.  if we hear the sound
(there it is
now) come from somewhere in the house, we just call them and they come
running as though they were asking "hey!  where are you?!?!  i
can't find you!!".  we always yell back "we're upstairs!"  and they come
running like AH HA!! THERE you are.  sometimes they'll make it while
sitting right there with us and it's interpreted as "hey, i want attention
from you!"

In a word, I would have to say that Matilda is MOUTHY! This girl doesn't
know when to shut-up!

Have a feeling that I should have given her the name of  "Chatty Cathy." :c)

"If the end does not justify the means--what can?"

"Reason has seldom failed us because it has seldom been tried."

"Is there a God? Who knows? Is there an angry unicorn on the dark side of the moon?"

"Whatever we cannot easily understand we call God; this saves much wear and tear on the brain tissues."

"Only a fool is astonished by the foolishness of mankind."

"I hate intellectual discussion. When I hear the words `phenomenology' or `structuralism', I reach for my buck knife."

"When I hear the word `culture', I reach for my checkbook."

"From the point of view of a tapeworm, man was created by God to serve the appetite of the tapeworm."

"What's the difference between the Lone Ranger and God? There really is a Lone Ranger."

"What did Jesus say to the headwaiter at the Last Supper? `Separate checks, please.'"

"Every man has two vocations: his own and philosophy."

"Through logic and inference we can prove anything. Therefore, logic and inference, in contrast to ordinary daily living experience, are secondary instruments of knowledge. Probably tertiary."

"Metaphysics is a cobweb that the mind weaves around things."

"The world is older and bigger than we are. This is a hard truth for some folks to swallow."

"When the philosopher's argument becomes tedious, complicated, and opaque, it is usually a sign that he is attempting to prove as true to the intellect what is plainly false to common sense. But men of intellect will believe anything-- if it appeals to their ego, their vanity, their sense of self-importance."

"What ideal, immutable Platonic cloud could equal the beauty and perfection of any ordinary everyday cloud floating over, say, Tuba City, Arizona, on a hot day in June?"

"Zen: the sound of the ax chopping. Chopping logic."

"This world may be only illusion--but it's the only illusion we've got."

"Is a mirage real? Well, it's a real mirage."

"Truth is merely common sense, say the naive realist. Really? Then where, precisely, is the location of--a rainbow? In the air? In the eye?  In between? Or somewhere else?"

Thanks Mary - I enjoy them!

Laila - Kidu jumps on the bed (or table or whatever) first, then
pushes with his hind legs and somehow manages to land and balance
himself on the door. I've asked him several times how the hell he does
this - but he won't clue me in ;-)  Anyway.. it's quite a sight!

You're right Mary! If only I had a video cam :-(

Aww. I don't have one either, but the Nikon Coolpix digital camera I got on
ebay for about $200 has a 40-second video function I have never tried. I
wonder if you have a friend with a digital camera or video camera who could
help? This is quite a trick and should be preserved for kitty and human
posterity alike! :)

The're cute.  I like their play area.  It looks big!  And the doors thing, of
course.

Thanks Candace! I get such a kick out of my two furclowns.

BTW your cats are adorable!

Anyway - we've just moved to a new home, so I'll be posting new pics
of them in their new surroundings in the near future.

Take care..
