We have a 4.5 lb, 5 month old kitten who has developed a respiratory
infection. We rushed to the vet yesterday, and she is on oral
antibiotics and eye drops.
She is just miserable. She can't breathe through her nose much and at
times breathes through her mouth. Her eyes are running. Yesterday, she
had a small fever.
The last time I saw her eat was yesterday morning. I have force-fed an
older cat once during a URI, but hate to do it on this little girl. The
vet said she's got a lot of congestion running down her throat, and at
times I've heard a gurgling sound. Her heart and lungs were clear yesterday.
Any ideas? I went out and bought the stinkiest cat food I could find --
sardines, tuna, etc. She's not interested. How long should I give her
before force-feeding?
Thanks,
Rhonda

I don't know, but have you tried babyfood? Meat babyfood with no onions
is often regarded by cats as ambrosia.

Good idea!
I'll go get some now.

Okay, it was a big N.O. for baby food. She would not even lick it off of
her paw.
I'm getting concerned that we should hospitalize her at the emergency vet.

Have you tried steaming up the bathroom and sitting with her in it for a
while? I'd give the vet a call and see what they think about force feeding.
Rhonda - 03 Oct 2004 06:59 GMT
Hi Karen,
Have not tried the steamy bathroom yet, but I may try it tomorrow. I was
a little worried about stressing her out more than she is (changing from
room to room.) I did try it for one cat once, and was not sure it
helped. It seemed so much cooler on the floor where he was, but steamier
for me standing up. This one is not going to let me hold her up I can
tell that now... Would be nice if there were little cat vaporizers!
Will check if this might work tomorrow. Thank you.

I'd be worried, too, because I have always heard that kittens decline fast. I
think I would at least call the emergency vet and see if they think you should
bring her in. Let us know.

Hi Candace,
Emergency clinics always think you should bring them in! :) At least
around here...
I thought about it today, but only want to hospitalize her if absolutely
necessary. So much stress for all of us.
Tomorrow she has to be better or she will go in.
Thanks for answering!

Rhonda--you might ask your vet if she can take Sudafed.
Cheeks had a cold and is very skinny so I worried about her getting off her
feed from the congestion. The vet had me give her Sudafed and it cleared her
snuffles up. The question is, can she have it with her other
medications--and is it okay for kittens. (My cat is full grown.) It worked
great on Cheeky. You need to get the dosage and interaction info. from your
doctor, first though.

Hi Mary,
Our vet doesn't work on Saturdays, so we were kind of on our own today.
I will ask her for next time, though. Man, I hope there is no next time
like this one...
Thanks for answering,
Rhonda

Thanks for all of the responses.
She is a spitfire and I've had trouble getting the medicine into her.
I've put food on her paws and nose now, with not much interest on her
part. I heated food and she is just not interested.
I'm worried about her fluids, too. Tonight I decided I would get
something into her -- I tried force-feeding a combo of baby food and
pedialyte. I have scratches everywhere, and only managed to get about
3/4 cc into her.
The good news is, as soon as I let her go she ran to the water bowl! She
batted at it in a frustrated way then sat beside it. Then her mom came
over and started drinking, just like she was encouraging her. It was
great! The little girl stuck her head in too and they both drank for
quite awhile. It's a relief, but tomorrow I'll be looking for
improvement or we might go to emergency.
Thanks everyone,
Rhonda

That is excellent that she drank water!! If you *do* try force feeding her
again, wrap her in a towel. Set her on top of the towel and fold the back
over her but and then the two sides so only her head sticks out. But I would
check with a vet soon.

How is the kitty doing now?
Rhonda - 08 Oct 2004 00:58 GMT
Hi Connie,
Thanks for asking. Little Saffron is much better. She started eating
about 2 days ago, and last night ate quite a bit. One turning point was
giving her pain medication. Apparently they develop ulcers in their
mouth and throat, and that was part of the reason she drooled a lot and
wouldn't eat. She got a surge of energy when the pain was gone, and she
started nibbling food. She still has some noisy breathing, but is better
in general, and is off of the pain meds.
That was not a fun ride for any of us!
