Seeking URGENT HELP - small kitten bleeding from mouth

Few days ago I found a tiny, few days old, male kitten, abandoned. He
was still blind, and separated from his mother.

Due to the stupidity and carelessness of people in the country I live
in, I was unable to find a vet. No vet would check such small kitten -
all said - all is lost. By the way, I'm sorry for the awkwardness of
this message, but I'm in a real hurry, and in shock over the
possibility of losing this kitten.

Today, the kitten started meowing like he cannot breathe properly,
like he has some fluid in his throat/nose. We kept him warm all the
time, and I don't know what may have caused this. He was doing pretty
well until today, meowing normally. He doesn't want to drink milk nor
water anymore, and now he started bleeding from his mouth.

PLEASE, does anyone know how can I help him? Vitamins? Antibiotics?

Any suggestion is welcome!

Since you can't get him to a vet, please post in alt.med.veterinary ASAP.

It's possible his mother abandoned him because she knew he was sick. It
happens. When it does happen, usually only really good care from humans,
usually vets, can save the kitten. She may have gotten hurt, though, so first
do what you can for the basics, then get more professional advice.

1. The kitten needs kitten milk replacement, not cow's milk or goat's milk,
to thrive. I don't know if you've been giving him that or not, but if not, he
does need it.
2.  Mama is supposed to keep him clean, dry, and warm. Now, you have to. Make
sure he's warm (towels, warm water bottles, etc), clean (rub him gently, but
vigourously, with a warmed towel), and dry. You can also try suctioning any
mucous from his mouth and nose with a dropper.
3. You'll also need to stimulate him to make him eliminate if he's still that
young. Normally Mama would do it, but now you have to. They don't go potty on
their own very well until they're a few weeks old. They don't do it at all on
their own in the beginning.

Go post over on the vet board for more about what could medically be wrong
with him.

Let us know how it goes, okay?

Sorry, I just read your post, Kaeli. Since I'm posting using Google,
it takes a while until my message shows up.

I tried everything I could. I search all over the town (and within a
100 mile radius) for kitten milk, noone has it (some of the folks in
pet shops said they had never heard of it, and that kitten can survive
with only cows mils).

I always kept him warm. I used bottles filled with warm water, as you
described it. My other kitty (about 2 and a half months old female)
managed to clean him and stimulate him. As soon as I found him I took
him to a vet and he laughed in my face - he thinks I'm crazy for
taking care of that kitten. He didn't want to examine it. I phoned
several other vets, and none of them wanted to check the kitten. All
of them said that the kitten won't make it thru the night.

He surved a few days. He was doing great, opened his eyes yesterday,
and drank milk regularry. I tried making the kitten milk using the
info gathered on the Net, but mainly because of my poor grasp of
English language (or maybe some of the ingredients were brand names) I
failed to do it. So I took the pet shop's advice and fed him kitten
milk.

About an hour after I posted my initial message the kitten died. I
wish I could say he died peacefully, but he was meowing like he's
suffocating during the last few hours and was bleeding from mouth. I
could't end his pain. I guess I either had some hope left or I simply
couldn't do it. Finally he fell asleep and stopped breathing soon
afterwards.

This has devestated me. I take very good care of all my pets, and I
get strongly attached to animals very easily. And seeing this poor cat
go away suffering like this really broke me.

Thanks for your help. I appreciate it, I guess if I had posted this
earlier or have been more persuasive with the vets he might still be
alive.

It sounds like there was something seriously wrong with kitty and I hope you
do not beat yourself up over this. Kitty had a loved life even if that was
short. You need to remember that.

You did the best you could do to save that kitten -
and I would guess it just wasn't meant to be.  Please
don't think badly of yourself because he didn't live -
you loved him and made his ending a lot more
peaceful that what could have happened to him in the
wild.

I wish I could say (write) more that will help to ease your
pain. . . .
Fondly,

Don't blame yourself.
Sometimes the world sucks.

At least the kitty was loved for a few days. His mama probably abandoned him
because he was very ill and only really good (and expensive) vet care would
have saved him (and sometimes even that doesn't work). It sounds like that
kind of care wouldn't happen where you are, so don't be too hard on yourself.
You did a kind thing. Karma has a way of bringing that good stuff back on ya.
:)

Take care.

Once again I'd like to thank everyone for your kind words of support.
I did everything I could, I realize that, but thinking of the poor guy
laying in his basket, surrounded by warm bottles and towels makes me
very sad... I realize I do get very emotional when a pet dies, but I
guess that's just the way I am.

I am glad that his suffering is now over, though...

How about taking him to a local animal shelter? They might have a vet on
staff there.

Too late. He died within hours. It's incredible how much I got
attached to the kitten for just a few days. If there were only more
vets in this country who actually care about animals, I believe he
would make it.

Funny but the message source would seem to indicate somewhere around Ohio.

Christ. I gave up checking headers I got so much crap about it. So I'm
guessing the
kitten could very well have gotten vet care, if indeed the kitten ever
existed. It all
just makes me wanna say WHATEVER, you know?

I only check them when the location might be relevant to the answer.

I guess this time it really is Serbia?

I'm very sorry for the poor baby.  May I ask what country you are in?  I don't
understand why all the vets refused to treat him.  What sort of animals do they
treat?

He is safe now and I'm sure he felt your love.

Thank you (and everyone else) for your kind words.

I live in Serbia, and vets usually treat animals such as pigs,
chicken, goats, etc.. Well, some of them also treat cats (and dogs,
and other pets) but they never care too much about them. If it looks
like the pet is ill, they will always say "buy a new one", since they
obviously had never heard of emotional attachment.

Thanks,

Oh, I understand.  How sad for all those other animals then.  It must be
difficult to live somewhere where your basic value system differs so much from
the norm (of the rest of the country, I mean).  I'm very sorry about the kitty
and all the other animals there who are unable to get veterinary care when they
need it.

I wish you and the others who ask for help like this give us a clue where you
live...maybe one or 1 million of us could find a vet for you.  I don't know how
people's stupidity would prevent you from finding a vet, but that's another
issue.  No yellow pages available? google might have helped if you type in
veterinarian, <your city, state>... I would keep trying for a vet..immediately.

Way late on this one Luvskats. And the OP lives in Serbia. No wonder they
had a difficult time.

It makes sense, now.  Breaks my heart though.
