Need to get my cat to sleep. Cat is 12-14lbs. A standard pill is 25mg.
What's safe to give Gus?

Thanks

Why do you need him to go to sleep?

Because he tends to the nocturnal, waking me up 2 or three times a night,
and I need to start getting up early.

Try changing his feeding time to before you go to bed.  That should
make him settle down for a sleep, at least until you're in deep sleep
yourself.

Drugging him is not the answer. Either shut him in a room far enough away
that you can't hear him, or in the farthest room from yours and buy a big
HEPA filter to put by your bed. The noise keeps you from hearing much. You
can also try tiring him out with play a couple of hours before you need to
go to bed. Do you even have any idea at all if diphenhydramine is safe for
cats? My doctor prescribed nondrowsy Sudafed for my cat when she had a cold,
but that was not for sleeping.

Don't drug the poor animal.  Close your bedroom door, or get earplugs.

Why not take a sleeping aid yourself until your cat adapts to your new
routine.

Damn, Phil. Simple, brilliant--just beautiful. ;) Why didn't I think of
that?

I'm a firm believer in modifying the environment (including my lifestyle) to
suit the cat rather than modifying the cat!

Now let's hope the OP didn't drug the cat.

This stuff is very dehydrating, you may wind up killing
your cat. Bad idea.

I have a high tolerance for most drugs but diphenhydramine (benadryl) wipes me
out, just 25 mg of it so I sure wouldn't give it to a cat.  I don't think I've
heard of benadryl being given to cats.  I sure wouldn't do it, you don't know
what might happen.  If you do what people suggest, play with him before bed,
feed him, etc., he will eventually get more on to your schedule.  Or lock him
elsewhere for the night as others said.  Bad idea to experiment with drugs on a
cat.

I wonder if John thinks cats respond the same as humans do to these
drugs? They have a whole other physiology. Lots of people have no
idea that even chocolate can kill dogs and that onions can hurt cats.

While it is safe to give an accurate dose of diphendyramine to a cat under a
vet's supervision, what you are proposing is not acceptable use of a drug.
Drugging your cat for something easily handled by other means is dangerous,
immoral, and it's unethical for anyone to assist you in the endeavor.
John - 04 Oct 2004 03:39 GMT
I think you're being a little self righteous here.

How is it immoral to administer a drug thats' innocuous enough to be seld
OTC?

For future reference safe dosage is appx 1-2mg per lb of body weight.

We're talking about benadryl here people, not oxycontin.

No, she is right. Drugging your cat is a profoundly stupid idea. Use your
head. You got lots of good suggestions. Don't hurt your cat.
