I've got a wonderful cute little kitten. Born last March, she is now 6
months old. She's as crazy and playful as could be imagined.
However, she won't sit on my lap and cuddle. Last night, I finally got
her to relax on top of my chest as I lay down, and to accept me
scratching her behind the ears.
I'd like to get her to enjoy this. Any suggestions?

Yeah. Wait. ;-) Really. Kittens & young cats are often too antsy & full
of curiosity to stay in one's lap for any length of time - like over 2
seconds. One of my cats was like this till she was about 5 years old, when
she turned into a lap cat after all.

I agree with both Cathy and Karen's answers--and just wanted to add
that the way they change over time is one of the most rewarding things
about having a cat. You are lucky--I have never gotten to raise one
from a kitten--so I hope you enjoy it! Show her over and over again
that she can trust you and she'll show her appreciation. You might also
try treats just to hurry the process along a bit! When you go to lay
down (not at bedtime!) take some of those little soft treats with yopu,
then call her, feed her and praise, praise, praise, while petting!

Good advice. I just wanted to add something else you could try too. If your
cat likes to sleep on a particular blanket, you put the blanket on your lap.

They usually settle down and like it better as they get older and don't have
so much energy. However, some don't like it that much. Really make over her
when she is sleepy. Don't try picking her up if she doesn't like, just try
cuddling near her when she is "loungy". I have one that only comes for
cuddles if I am laying down. She just won't ever commit to being ON me.
Personality is different in every case.

Some cats are cuddly, some are not.
We had Cali over two years before she would get up on our laps. Even then,
it only started because I was sitting in HER chair and she wanted me to
move. Since I did not move, she decided to join me. She will get up on us
now if it is her idea. Forget picking her up and expecting her to stay.
Smokey has always been a lap cat, but only if you're wearing long pants.
Shorts are a no go for both cats. Neither cat will sleep on my chest, which
seems strange since all the cats I had when I was young loved to do this.

Wait a few months! A six-month-old kitten is physiologically equivalent to
a rambunctious teenager.

I've had one lap cat, one who would let me carry him around and the rest
followed me from room to room. I loved 'em all. :-)

Is she fixed yet? It's time, and it will help to calm her somewhat. But,
age will do the most.
