Leg wound?

Hi,

Frank is an outside cat.  I know there are good reasons for keeping him
inside, etc. but anyway, he loves to be out and we have a huge yard,
so...

I noticed he has a bald patch on the top of his left front leg about the
size of a penny.  It looks like there is a cut (superficial - not deep
at all) in the middle of the bald patch.  There might be a tiny bit of
inflammation around the cut.  He doesn't seem to be favouring the leg or
in any pain - just goes about his business as usual.

We're taking him into the vet in a couple of weeks for feline leukemia
booster shots, etc. Should I be concerned about Frank's wound? Would it
necessitate a special trip to the vet?   I just noticed the wound
yesterday and have been keeping close tabs on it. Do cats often "worry"
wounded areas and bite the fur away from the wound?

Is this pretty typical or is it a cause for alarm?  I don't know much
about cats. Frank is our first and we've had him for just over a year.

If anyone knows of some good cat care websites, that could be helpful as
well.  I've googled some and they're okay as far as they go...

Thanks in advance to anyone who responds to this,
Dave and Anne and Frank

I would just watch it since it does not sound infected. If it gets swollen
or oozes, you should get him in sooner. He has probably been keeping it
clean and that is why the hair is gone.

I strongly suspect he's got an abscess - falling out of hair is the most
visible sign. He may not be favouring the leg in your presence, but remember
animals hide pain when they're around other creatures. If I were you, I'd
get him to the vet now to check it out. And then you may need to read the
thread about getting antibiotics down your cat's throat!

This is pretty common. I've had two cats that ended up with a little bald patch
around a very minor wound. I forget the medical explanation for it, but it was
something like a bacterial infection that had set in. Put some Panalog on it if
you have some. The hair will grow back.
OTOH, only if you're sure the cut is an actual minor wound that healing, and
not a place where the cat has fussed with it. Ringworm also starts out as a
bald patch.
