Help me be strong. Please. :)
This evening I was standing in front of the house talking to
DH and a friend of ours when I see a *tiny* grey kitten run down the
sidewalk across the street. I blink, go 'What the..." and run across
the street. Kitten is tiny, maybe 6-8 weeks old, nothing but skin and
bones, and a super-sweet kneading purring machine.
So Kitten is ensconced in the basement bathroom with food,
water, litterbox (which he used!), toys, and bed of sweaters. He ate
until his little tummy was enormous, purring like a motorboat the
entire time.
The boys have no idea that there's another cat in the house
yet because the basement has a door at the top of the stairs and we
shut them out of it.
I do not need another cat. Right?

I think sometimes the stray cat you meet up with in the street can end up
being the most special of any cat you ever have. I just adopted an 8 week
old kitten about a year ago. My 14 and 13 year old girls were not thrilled
but due to my age it was get the kitten now or never again have a little
kitten because I must outlive my cats. The cats adjusted and now are one
big happy family.
But my 14 year old is the stray I met in the street, declawed and not even
full grown. She was playing with the kids and had been a stray in the
neighborhood for 3 weeks. We had heard a kitten crying in the early morning
hours but could never find the kitten. After I took her in we never heard
the crying again.
Very recently I came to the realization that this particular cat who is the
most wonderful cat I ever met has been a guardian angel for me. She has
seen me through troubles, most serious was breast cancer 7 years ago. There
is just something so special about her. I do love the others but those cats
I actually went and actively seeked out to adopt.
So, take a second look at the little kitten you found in the street and go
for it!

Yup. My Mom's favorite cat was her Tom, who she found in the parking lot of
some Mexican restaurant. We had no intention of keeping him. ;)
We thought he was nearly full grown at 9 pounds. He wasn't. He got to be a
very robust 22 pounds and looked kinda sorta like a Maine Coon type cat. He
was the bestest boy ever, or so we all say. :)
My aunt's two cats that lived to be like 20 each were also strays found as
babies.

It has never occurred to me to adopt anything but a stray. The response
has always been "oh cool, this one's up for grabs!"
andr0meda - 24 Sep 2004 20:00 GMT
My friend Amanda was kind enough to adopt two needy cats that I couldn't
have. Now she calls them her 'lucky charms', since they brought her a lot of
good luck and continue to do so.
As to my cat; I strongly believe that my mother's soul is trapped in her -
she came back to me as a cat so that I can take good care of her as she
always wanted me to.
Warm regards,
Andr0:)

Good luck. *grins*

How many is too many? I promised I wasn't getting more than two. Then
I saw Jackie and had to get her out of there. So now I have three. My
family says that after three you become the folks that we read about
in the papers when they take them away.

Oh please. After 14 or something maybe.

Well I suppose it depends on the size of house, your budget, and so
on. Plus, you need enough people to provide attention. Each cat
requires something of a commitment of time just to pet them once in a
while. Also, there needs to be enough laps for the lapsitters to fill.
And enough old style (CRT) monitors to provide heat.

Well, this is true, but IMO you can't seriously be labeled a collector
unless you can't provide proper care, including spay neutering. And when you
hide them in basements because of your inability. Otherwise, people need to
mind their business. Just my opinion. Of course there needs to be common
sense, but some people are a little over the edge about it. I used to think
I could NOT have more than two cats because how could I provide enough
attention. I inherited my brothers cat and really, they have worked out a
nice schedule. It has convinced me that *probably* I could give attention
and afford even two more. I would just need a bigger place. That will
probably not happen, but adding Pearl showed me a lot.

I wasn'tg ever going to ahve moe than 2 cats. Just couldn't handle it.
Had 2 cats for about 14 years. Then we found a little kitten
wandering
loose over a period of days.
Had 3 for a few years then I got another apple head siamese. A year
later
a woman came to work with a box of kitten, put this tiny gray thing in
my hands
and then I had Mosby.
So now I have 7. Have had 8 but one died of Fe Leuk. Have another
Feleuk
pair so no more until they are gone.
It can be done, but you gotta budge $$ and time. Mine are happy and
content.

For me it started out as one. I adopted Isis from the Humane Society and for
four years she was the only cat until I rescued Jade from an abandoned
apartment where the people got evicted and left her behind. Then a little
over a month ago I found and rescued Icarus who was found wondering around
outside as a stray. Now I have 3 cats.

How do you manage that? Are the others vaccinated against Fel Leuk?

They are all vaccinated, including the ones with FeLeuk.
I've got those 2 on metacam daily. They were rescues and by the time
we found out (I was told they'd been tested) they had FeLeuk,
they'd been with my other cats for months. Seemed useless to
isolate them.

Hint: if you lie down on the couch, there's a lot more area for cats to
cover. ;-)

Yeah, mine have divvied up *where* they own me. Benjie owns me in my bed
(he monitors my bedtime and rising), Caley owns me in the recliner and
computer chari, and when I'm on the sofa it's first come first served,
with room for many.

I want more. We have the room. My husband won't agree, though,
and until I get one of the current cats to get a job to pay half the
mortgage we're just out of luck.

Heh. I can relate. Sprocket may or may not be adopted out. Right now I
couldn't stand to let the little smurf go.

Sounds like he needs you though. I think it also sounds like love at
first site.
Any chance of finding him a home?
