When Hodge is confronted with the laser pointer or (as I discovered
today), soap bubbles (bubble toy), he opens his mouth wide and basically
says, "Eh eh eh eh eh" in short bursts, a little like a duck quacking. I
can't tell if he's upset or just excited. Any thoughts?

My guess is that he's excited rather than upset. That sounds like the noise
cats sometimes make when they are watching birds. Does your cat seem to
enjoy chasing the laser? That would give you the real answer, I think.
Holly adores the laser point -- she leaps into my lap the minute I reach for
the drawer where I keep it.
