I am now attempting to get in the habit of brushing my cats teeth and am wondering if I can use a regular toothbrush and what non-harmful toothpaste I can use for them? I would buy the toothpaste they have at Petsmart but they wanted a little too much money. Can our human toothpaste be used for cats?  SignatureCat Galaxy: All Cats! Spring for the one at Petsmart. It only takes a little. I bought the big soft rubber brush that you slip over your finger and it is too large for Cheeky's mouth. I find that a bit of the chicken-flavored toothpaste I got at the vet on a clean, warm, moist, thin washcloth (bleached and right out of the dryer, used once) wrapped around my fingertip works better. I scrub very gently. She seems to like it. Will a regular size toothbrush work? I found ones for 50 cents a piece at Walmart so I was thinking of getting them all their own toothbrush. They're a lot smaller than the adult versions. The brushes sold by vets are soft rubber, much softer than the nylon bristles for humans. Cats are smaller, maybe their gums are tender. If harsher bristles were better there would be brushes like this for cats, I think. The chicken-flavored toothpaste is enzymatic, not abrasive, so it seems it is the application that will do it, not so much the brushing. I think extreme gentleness should be the approach. Like soothing. Also they will learn to like it and so be better "patients." Cheeky thinks the chicken flavor is quite tasty, I can tell. That little foil packet of paste is hard to deal with. I just got a tube of the paste separately. I tried getting singles from my vet but they're packaged as the picture Megan posted. I'm using 1 toothbrush for all cats, which I'm not sure is a no no or not. My vet says a piece of guaze wrapped around your finger with no paste works just as well. Thanks for the suggestion. I'll try it as it'll certainly be cheaper but I was ready to buy toothbrushes. Absolutely not. Most toothpastes contain sodium laurel sulfate (foaming agent) and cats cannot spit it out. Human toothpastes can also contain other ingredients that cats should not have. Spend the money for a tube of cat toothpaste. It should last you a while.
