If your mom can find a few things he likes, gets him on a strictly
canned food diet and counts his calories (15 calories/pound and I gave
you a link to calorie content of foods in another post) he will not only
lose weight, but he will have very few hairballs. I have 23 cats that
are on a canned diet and I maybe see 8-10 hairballs a month and that's
it.

"Concerning all acts of initiative (and creation), there is one

material assistance, which no man could have dreamt would have come his
way."

We did try that, but he's a fierce picky eater. He was raised on dry and she
didn't vary the flavor at all. Best way to make a finicky eater ever.
As far as wet, he will ONLY eat Friskies Mariner's Catch flavor. Nothing
else. And he doesn't always eat that.
I came by my free-feeding habits naturally - it's how we always did it. Mom
still free-feeds dry and offers wet in the evening (after I told her how much
better it was for them).
This is one of those "I wish I had known then what I know now" things, I'll
tell you. I'd have never started the kids on dry...

I switched to Wellness a few months ago, and I've only seen one
hairball since switching to it. When they were on dry, I saw about a
hairball a week from each cat, and somewhat less often when I first
switched them to canned Science Diet and Iams kitten food (for the
diabetic) before switching to Wellness.
LeMieux (once known as The Puke-a-saurus, from eating dry food
too fast), has not barfed once since the Wellness. Other than one
hairball, Gideon only barfed when the Tapazole started making him
sick before his thyroid surgery.

I have to agree that even in the short time I've switched to canned
(Wellness), the hairballs have disappeared by me too. Usually I'd see
a hairball once per week, despite brushing and petromalt. And yes,
Benny was also an eat-too-fast-than-puke dry food kitty. That has
stopped too (thankfully).

Max Cat puts out a Hairball Management food, in a chicken and rice
'formula'. My picky Mico loves it. The store manager told me it was very
popular as well.

Ooh, I'll pass that on. See if he'll eat it. His normal food is Pro Plan
chicken and rice, IIRC. He may turn up his little kitty nose, but it's worth
a shot...My kids like PP as well as Max, so maybe...
Thanks.

I give Kami four Poince Hairball treats every Friday and they are a
godsend. She won't take any other hairball remedies. I haven't seen
one since we started a few years ago except for when she decided not to
eat the treats. There are various hi-grade foods available for
hairballs, too, if you want to give them a try. The only one I can
think of is Science Diet since it's right next to Kami's senior food.
