my 2yr.old female cat had a seizure for the first time today at 3am.
seattle time on 9-11-04. It lasted about 15 minutes, her back legs were
kicking violently and her frontpaws were holding on to the carpet.  She
also urinated, her sister, brother,(same litter)and mother watched on but
stayed away.
We put Tabby in a carrier after the seizure. She was unable to move her
back legs on her own,but now she is resting.
Any advise on what to do and what may have caused this?
Thank you  DAN.

Lots of things. She *must* see a vet.

You're posting this AFTER going to the vet, right?

Hi,

There could be a number of causes for these seizures. 15 minutes is a
hell of a long time to fit. Usually anything over 4 minutes and if
seizures repeat rapidly one after the other (staus) then the kitten is
at risk.

Your vet should examine the following causes ...

Liver Problems
Kidney Disease
Toxins (from plants and chemicals)

also

Bacterial, viral, fungal or parasitic brain infection
Brain Inflammation
Brain Abscess
Brain Tumour
Head Injury
Inherited Brain Defect

Obviously most of these will NOT apply to your kitten.

The vet is the best person to give you a cause and once he and you
know the cause he will also suggest a course of treatment. We can all
help you with this. A few people here and on the other cat newsgroups
have sizure affected and epileptic cats.

Seizure in kittens/cats is not a death sentence so do not panic. It
may just require additional care for the little puss.

Please get back to us here and let us know what your vet says!

Good Luck!

Iain

Hi,

If your cat goes out into a garden or nearby your house it may be
worth checking out what plants she may be chewing on. This is probably
the most likely source of seizure especially if your cat is drooling
excessive salivation prior to the seizure.

I'm not too up on seizure-causing plants though I would expect a few
people on this newsgrup are .....
