I have noticed that my cat, Lily, has some scabs on her chest and stomach.
I first noticed it last week when I was brushing her.  I found 1 scab on her
stomach, which I guessed was probably where she had scraped herself on
something.  The fur is so think on her underside that I could feel the scab,
but couldn't see it.  This morning I have found 2 more 1 near the first one
and 1 further up  on her chest.

There is no evidence of fleas or ticks, the scabs don't feel like ring worm
and the fur is not falling out.  The closest thing I could compare it to is
mange in a dog (do cats get mange?)  She is booked in at the vet's next week
for her vaccinations, so I will ask the vet about it then but has anyone
here got any ideas as to what it might be?

Gosh, could be a lot of things. I'd get it looked at before it gets bad.
Flea dirt is usually the culprit in a flea allergy and they don't need to
even be on the cat.

Does she like to lie in wet grass after dewfall or after it rains?
When I brought Gideon in for dragging his foot, he had a rash on his
belly that at first just looked like pink and red blotches, and the vet
said it looked like a mild staph infection from lying in something wet.
It had drizzled on and off for several afternoons before, and he'd been
relaxing in the cool damp grass in the evening.  A few days later,
it looked somewhat scabby, and to my eye, worse, but the vet said it
was the previous rash healing.  His hair on his belly is fairly sparse,
so I could see it a lot better than you apparently can see Lily's.

This could be the problem I'm describing.  Since summer started, Lil has
seemed to prefer venturing out in the morning and early evenings.  Summer in
Great Britania consists of drizzyly mornings, drizzily days followed by
coldish drizzily nights so there is a lot of damp grass to go around.  Also,
when I call her in at night she always runs from underneath a big clump of
bushes at the back of my house which I know are planted in water-logged
grassy ground.

As you say, I would have never seen the initial rash even if it had
appeared.  So, if this is the problem, does it just heal on its own?

I will still ask the vet about it but it seems to me that this may be the
cause of the problem as nothing else has changed.  I'm a bit lairy of vets
diagnoses in skin conditions.  I know a dog owner who keeps paying for
steroid shots for her dog because he is constantly scratching and biting
himself.  What she (and the vet) also know is that she baths the dog every
day because she thinks "he smells doggy".  (Vets eyes = ?????)

Thanks for the advice Jamie :-)

Well, it's not wet all that often, here in Texas, so it cleared up
on its own.  If she continues to lie in wet grass, she might need
something for it.
