I received a beautiful crocheted afghan and when I was opening the
box, I then smelled cat urine. It must have somehow happened right
before it was packaged and sent to me.. I of course didn't tell them
that this had happened.
Can someone please advise me how to get the cat urine out of this hand
made crocheted afghan?
Thanks,
Angie

PetZyme (the formulation for cats) worked wonders in eliminating the odor of
both spray and urine from my sister's house. I have never tried it on an
afghan, and I would consider it important for you to read the instructions
carefully and spot test because that is an unusual problem. However, it was
great stuff for more "normal" purposes. It is available at PetSmart.

What is the afghan made of? Acrylic? Wool? Cotton?

Yeah I think that's important to find out. You may have luck taking it to a
dry cleaners or using the product Mary suggested.

Maybe the cat just wanted some way to wish you a Happy Wedding as well. Since he couldn't buy you a
gift, he just added some of his Scent to the gift his keeper was getting you.
I'd leave it just the way it is. You'll thnk of that cat every time you snuggle up and wrap the
afghan around you.

Yuck.

I would hand wash it and add Febreze to the water.

You can machine wash it on the gentle/handwash cycle in cold water. Use
All/Surf brand (the two brands merged into one) laundry soap and get the
"ocean breeze" scent, which is actually the original scent and is the
only soap I've found that will totally remove the odor of cat pee on the
first try. Use one and one half full capfuls, do a double rinse and then
hang the afghan to dry naturally.
That should do the trick.

Thank you all for the replies. I will maybe try just cleaning it at
home on a gentle cycle as suggested and use one of the products you
also suggested.
I think it was crocheted of cotton yarn.
Thanks for all the help again.... I hope to get this smell out!

You could ask the person who gave you the gift if it is cotton or some other
fabric "so that you will know when it needs to be cleaned." That would
avoid the need to mention that the afghan was soiled before it arrived, but
you would know more about appropriate cleaning methods.

That's a good idea. I crochet, and when I make a larger item I'll keep
one of the yarn wrappers and tuck that into the gift, so the recipient
has the washing instructions.
