I posted last month to this group about my IC cat being taken off dry
food and developing diarrhea. I have since tried several types of
fiber supplements and several types of pet-store canned food, but she
is still having diarrhea. I tried the Science Diet canned hairball,
which seemed to work for her, but she hates it and won't eat it. I
have started giving her dry food (Iams Hairball) again and the
diarrhea has improved somewhat, but she is starting to display some of
the IC signs again. I just can't seem to find a good balance--if I
give her too much dry, she seems fine in the poop department but not
good in with IC. Half and half doesn't seem to be working
either--then neither condition is doing well. I would like to try
some of the other hairball canned foods out there, but none of the
stores in my area carry them. I am also thinking of trying some other
type of hairball or high fiber-type dry food--is there any kind which
might be less troubling than others for IC? Would any of the vet-type
foods be good for these two conditions?
I have been putting Cosequin in her canned food for about 2 weeks. I
have been splitting it into about 1 capsule 4 times a day. I know it
has been recommended to only feed twice a day, but she doesn't eat it
all if I put down large amounts and it ends up getting wasted. Should
I distribute the Cosequin differently?
Thanks for your knowledgeable advice,
Holly

For food, have you tried Wellness? It's much better than what you've
tried so far and does not have grains. You can always add a little
canned pumpkin or about 1/8 tsp of plain psyllium (available at health
food stores) to your cat's feeding protocol to help with any diarrhea
that might occur. It will probably clear up over time. As for the
Cosequin, I don't mix it with food. I just pop it right down their
throat and follow that with a 3 ml syringe of water to wash it down.
That way it's certain the whole dose has been taken. If your cat seems
difficult to pill, doing this every day will likely get her used to it
and easier over time. That has been my experience with several cats.

"Concerning all acts of initiative (and creation), there is one
elementary truth the ignorance of which kills countless ideas and
splendid plans: that the moment one definitely commits oneself, then
providence moves too. A whole stream of events issues from the decision,

material assistance, which no man could have dreamt would have come his
way."
