Sprocket update: when can I cut his claws?

Little Sprocket is coming along great.  He's officially 5 weeks old today,
eating like a champ and playing up a storm.  I am having more accessories
for his "playpen" cage shipped so he'll have more interesting things to
run up and play on.  He's really good at climbing up the wire walls and
leaping sideways onto the lower shelf, but he doesn't fancy the cardboard
ramp I've taped on to get to the higher shelf.  He slips on the cardboard
and doesn't "get" about digging his claws into it.  Nor does he scratch
or sharpen his claws on the cardboard I'm put down flat.

It's his claws I want to ask about.  They're growing a mile a minute, and
when I have him out to leap and pounce about the sofa, etc., he's
constantly getting them caught on cushions, curtains, even on my flesh.
(Ouch!)  Is he old enough for me to start cutting them?

His cage is currently in the livingroom so he can be in the middle of
things and observe my three adult cats.  Should I move the cardboard
scratching thingie the big boys like closer to him so he can see them
using it?

Thanks.

Sure.  You can get him used to having his paws handled by massaging his paws
when he's sleepy.  You can trim the sharp points off and that should help a lot
:)

Oh, good.  He's polydactyl, so he's got *lots* of those little needles.

Awwww. Kittens are so damn cute.  :)

He's never too young to start getting him used to it.
Get him used to having his paws handled as if you were going to cut the
nails, including extending the nail and everything. Do that for a week, less
if he's really good about it, then go ahead and trim just the tip, being
careful about the quick. One nip at the quick at his age could make him
pretty fearful for a long time, and you want him to think it's a cool thing,
not a bad thing.
Don't forget his treat afterwards.

I would.
Easier to get him started with the right habit than to try and fix a bad one.

Pics???  :)

I should add - he *does* have something to scratch in his cage, doesn't he?
If not, he should.

Try sisal to start. Most kittens really like how they can dig into it and
it'll help the nails grow nice, as they need to shed the outside of the nail
and they do that by scratching.

Keep in mind that not all cats like the same things - he may not like the
cardboard. He might prefer carpet or sisal. As long as it's not your couch,
be happy.  :)

I think now is the perfect time to get him used to having his claws clipped.
You may have to do a few at a time, though, because it is hard for him to
stay still very long at this age.
