My cat (14) has started licking the patio - anyone know why he does this?

Salt content?  It seems very strange.

Also, he just licks at his food and doesn't seem as interested as
he used to be - have tried several types of food now.

Do they do patio flavoured food???!!!  ;o)

Oo. Time for a blood work up. This can indicate an ailment. Anytime a cat
stops eating you should get them checked. I have heard of anemic cats
licking cement.

I have to agree with you Karen!

5 years ago my (now previous) cat took up patio stone licking and as well
showed disinterest in food.

The results of her checkup and full blood panel showed that, not only was
she anemic, she was hyperthyroid as well.

My himalayan with Chronic Renal Failure starting licking stone walls (and
eating kitty litter) when she became anemic. Yes, time for a checkup...

Thanks for all your advice - hubby had asked vet a few days ago
about licking patio and he just said it was to do with salt content
and sometimes they eat gravel too but it's ok...

However, when my cat stopped eating aswell we took him to the vet
for blood tests.  Funninly enough everyone thinks my cat is a
Himalayan (He's just a farm cat but we reckon his long-haired tabby
mother either mated with a siamese or himalayan - sorry I digress!)
and the blood tests revealed that he is anemic - have to take him
back today for injections - antibiotics and steroids.

Apparently the reading was supposed to be 5 but his was 21!

Thanks for all the advice everyone - give your pussies a BIG HUG!

Whoa. Maybe your vet will remember now if someone asks again. I've heard it
time and again on these boards the last couple of years that peoples cats
began to lick cement or eat gravel when anemic. I think it's common. Hope
kitty gets better.

I am SOOOOO sorry :(  Cats are VERY good at hiding illness and he was a
senior citizen kitty. It sounds like he lived very well up until the end.
Sometimes I think it is better than a lingering illness, many of which we
see here, but it is never easy. I'm so very sorry :(

I just wanted to add that I hope Mermaid will share
photos and stories of him with us. When my cat died many people in RL made
me feel odd because I was
grieving "as though I had lost a member of my family." I HAD lost a member
of my family. But many people here understand.

Thank you for that - I do feel like I've lost a member of my family.
It's my 8th wedding anniversary on Tuesday and there have always been
just the three of us.  :O)  Have to remember the special times we all
had together.

He had the most beautiful blue eyes.  It's 1:35am here so I guess I
should at least try to sleep.  Thank you so much for making me feel
'normal' about grieving for my 'baby'...

Thank you all for understanding.

Goodnight & God bless

Not only do we understand he was a member of the family but there are
studies that prove it is perfectly normal. I hope you can sleep and salvage
some of your anniversary. Remember, your boy doesn't want you to feel bad.
He is healthy again.

Because you have. He was a member of your family, just not a human member.
Many times the animal members are more comforting and loving than the human
members.

Yeah, that's the way. But you will be heartsore for a long time. It has been
three years since my Gnarly died at 20 and I still tear up when I look at
her pictures. And she wasn't really very nice. She was just MINE for 20
years and I was hers. I can still feel her soft fur and smell her nice
"clean and warm" smell when I snuggled with her---to me just as nice as that
of a baby, but no milky-baby powder smell!

You are better than normal! The norm is that people don't usually love pets
quite as much or as deeply--as you do. Something for you to be proud of. You
have a big heart. Your boy knew that and knew you did your best to take care
of him. Be good to yourself and tell us all about him to help your heart
heal. (When you create love it never truly dies. I really think that. The
way you felt about him and he about you made a piece of the world a better
place and goes on.)

Thank you Candace...

It's now 3:42 and I still can't sleep so have got up again to surf as
otherwise I am just lying in my bed thinking "If only I had done such and
such, etc, etc"

I've had him since he was only about 6/8 weeks old.  Sorry to keep going
on about him but he was a special boy.  Vet didn't think he had much
chance when I acquired him from a farm; worms, fleas - you name it he had
it but here we are 14 years later...    :O)

You can't worry about the ifs. 14 is a ripe age. Some live longer, some
don't get very long with us at all. He did not suffer and that is very good.
Cats are extremely good at hiding illness. Do not blame yourself.

I'm so very, very sorry to read this.   I hope that in time the good memories
you had with your boy will put your soul at ease.
