I am fostering a kitten who has a vaginal infection. It was first
diagnosed by the vet about two weeks ago when she was just 6 weeks.
He suggested waiting a week before giving her antibiotics because she
was quite small. A week later, the infection was getting worse (more
pus coming out) so he put her on some kind of antibiotic (to be added
to her food twice a day). It has been a week since then and although
better, she still has discharge. She's going back to the vet but I'm
wondering if this vet is very capable. After all, he let it go on for
one week before even giving her medication. Should I take her
elsewhere? Is there anything I should know about infections in cats
so I can go in armed with knowledge rather than following his
instructions blindly?

Hi Rona,
There's absolutely no way I would let an infection go a week in a 6-8
week-old kitten! They have immature immune systems that are unable to fight
off or contain infections. I would definitely find another vet.
Although its not common, the kitten could have vaginitis -which could be
caused by a bacterial infection or mycoplasma or possibly a foreign body.
Vaginitis in kittens can also be caused by defects in their vaginal
structure.
Kittens are very vulnerable - your vet's "wait and see" policy could be
fatal for a kitten. I would find a more aggressive vet.
Best of luck.
