I am so frustrated with this situation!  My cat has refused to go in the
litter box for over 6 weeks now and poops on  the floor.  He will "pee" in
the box and leave the box to poop on the rug surrounding the box.

He had a dental cleaning and tooth extracted in July.

I have taken him to the vet 3 times so far.  We have gone through a myriad
of medications and finished them all now as of one week ago.  Bobby is still
pooping on the floor.

I asked on a cat behavior group and they said he has "forgotten" about the
litter box and I can't believe that!  He is 8 years old and has always done
his "business" in the litter box.

I am just so frustrated.

Have you put another box next to his usual one - he may prewfer one box for
peeing & one for pooping.  Or you can even line up 3 boxes in a row.  One of
my cats pooped *just* outside the litter box when she was youngish; giving
her 3 litter boxes worked.

On the bright side, be glad he's pooping just outside the box, & peeing in
it.  In reverse it would be a lot worse, clean-up & smell-wise.  (Plus it's
not in random parts of the house.)

This cat is 8 years old and never had a problem before.  He has been with me
since he was 9 weeks old.

We never had problems like this before and the vet says he is in excellent
health.

This weekend I will add another litter box just in case he wants his own
after all these years.

He may be getting more picky & refined in his litter box habits in middle
age. ;-)

Let us know if adding a litter box helps.

I will.  I can't believe after all these years that he is getting picky but
a cat's age at 8 maybe middle age and maybe he is just getting older and
fussier.  I don't know.  I am making every excuse for him.

Frustration abound.

Also, try a different litter. my cat didn't like to poo in litter
pearls , maybe she couldn't get a grip . She prefers fine gravel,
almost like sand.
