This cat is 8 years old and never had a problem before. He has been with me
since he was 9 weeks old.
We never had problems like this before and the vet says he is in excellent
health.
This weekend I will add another litter box just in case he wants his own
after all these years.

He may be getting more picky & refined in his litter box habits in middle
age. ;-)
Let us know if adding a litter box helps.

I will. I can't believe after all these years that he is getting picky but
a cat's age at 8 maybe middle age and maybe he is just getting older and
fussier. I don't know. I am making every excuse for him.
Frustration abound.

Maybe he needs a new corvette

Also, try a different litter. my cat didn't like to poo in litter
pearls , maybe she couldn't get a grip . She prefers fine gravel,
almost like sand.
