Nutro, Science Diet, and MaxCat Canned

Mary - 30 Aug 2004 03:10 GMT These are the foods I got for my cats at Petsmart a couple of weeks ago.
Nutro is okay--they will eat it if I mash the chunks with a fork. (These are the cats who are hooked on Fancy Feast Chopped Grill Feast.) Maxcat is the same way--they want those chunks mashed or they will just lick the gravy off and leave the chunks. Science Diet canned is just the worst looking stuff I have ever seen. It has the consistency of pureed bean dip and looks grey. I bought chicken and seafood, and the cats hate it all. One of the MaxCat flavors is veal that is pureed, and they like that better. (We are not supposed to believe this is really veal, are we? Maybe a young calf ran by the processing plant?)
I want to try Wellness when these run out if I can find a local supplier. (Shipping is hefty on canned food, so that's a last resort.) Meanwhile, if I pop the top on a can of FF, it is still the only one that gets gobbled right down.

And, I must make the distinction between *ground* which is what my cats like, and *pureed* which is the really gross stuff! If I mail order, Petguard and Wellness are the ones I will get!

I fed Petguard for a while, though I stopped when the company refused to release the analysis of their food to me. A bad sign, I felt.
Steve.

Seriously, there are several "kinds" of Science Diet (most brands have different "texture" formulas).....there is the "chunks of meat in gravy" Science Diet Savory Cuts line, for example.

Oh I know all about the "kinds" of Scie Die, Gauby. In fact, when one of my cats had CRF, we tried some of the Savory Cuts since she would only eat sliced canned food, but she would have nothing to do with it. I remember that stuff smelled horrible! ________ See my cats: http://community.webshots.com/album/56955940rWhxAe Raw Diet Info: http://www.holisticat.com/drjletter.html http://www.geocities.com/rawfeeders/ForCatsOnly.html Declawing Info: http://www.wholecatjournal.com/articles/claws.htm

>Oh I know all about the "kinds" of Scie Die, Gauby. I see that your spelling still needs work, Lauren. ;) If your cat had been eating Science Diet for most of her life, it probably wouldn't have ingested all of the excess phosphorus in those other brands you were feeding.

Yeah but unfortunately when I did feed Scie Die to two of my cats, their coats were dry and flakey, and they vomitted from it. My cats aren't generally fond of canned food (other than the Hill's Prescription Diet a/d I used to feed Debbie when her appetite was depressed - which they begged me for), but they do like the SD seafood. To each their own.

My cats (the two at home, two at work) won't eat any wet food that is chunks or slices. They like food the consistency of Science Diet. At work, SD Light is the only canned food the cats will eat without a problem. I've tried other brands and some they've tasted, but most they just sniff and leave. My two cats at home also like Science Diet (turkey, chicken & liver, beef flavors). They also eat Wellness and Petguard, and like all three brands equally. Wellness & Petguard (5.5 oz cans) seem to be somewhat juicier than the Science Diet, but my cats like them all. I know I've tried Nutro in the past, don't remember what they thought of it.
I just picked up a couple of cans of Felidae Chicken & Rice. I split a can between the two at home yesterday and they didn't seem to notice it was something new. They just stuck their heads in the bowls and ate.

Sherry - 30 Aug 2004 04:26 GMT > (We are not >> supposed to believe this is really veal, are we? Maybe a young calf ran by >> the processing plant?) I noticed a Sheba can on the shelves that was "Duck in Aspic". Duck? You think it's really DUCK? I didn't look at the ingredients. Another weird one, and I think it's also Nutro, is "venison". (My cats like the "Hunter's Stew". I was afraid to look. I don't know *what* was "hunted" make that one.) Seriously, they like Nutro pretty well. Nutro & Pro Plan. It's a good step up from Fancy Feast.

zuzu22@webtv.net - 30 Aug 2004 04:16 GMT IMO Petsmart doesn't carry any brand of food good enough to feed my cats. Nutro used to be decent, but they changed to least cost formuation and that spells bad news if you demand quality and consistency in the food you feed.
