Spaying: Bad Reaction - but to what?

Has anyone had a similar experience?

We have three kittens all about six months. They're orphaned sisters
we fostered and then adopted. Yesterday they were spayed and came home
pretty miserable. This morning it's the same behavior and we're
worried.

They're normally very affectionate with each other. There's been
nothing but hissing and growling at each other. They also seem
restless and constantly walking around (almost like prowling). They're
also sort of instigating each other.

Are my babies ruined? Are they having a reaction to the anesthesia or
are they in pain? The vet said they may have a reaction but it would
be cleared up this morning. We're going to call when they open, but
would like to know if others have had this experience.

They are probably just in pain and smell funny to each other. You might just
separate them for now.

This really isn't a problem.  They smell like the vet instead of what
they're used to smelling like.  Therefore the pissyness.  It's fairly
common.  Just leave them alone and they'll work it out fine.

They just got their innards pulled out yesterday. If you had an
oviohysterectomy yesterday, you'd be a bit grouchy and miserable today, too.
I'm surprised they were sent home on the same day, actually. My vet keeps
them overnight.

Yes, they ARE in some pain. Cats just don't get all whiney like dogs and
humans. *heh*
If your vet didn't send you home with painkillers, shame on him/her.
I've been sent painkillers home for all my neutered kids.
DO NOT GIVE THEM HUMAN PAINKILLERS.
If they seem in more than a little pain (some signs are restless, ear
carriage back, tail dipped, hunched pelvis, more than usual amount of
pissiness, excessive grooming), ask the vet for a week's supply of pain
killers for them.
As to them not being affectionate with each other, they smell funny (vets,
antiseptic, stitches, and blood). Cats go a lot by smell. Rub them a bit with
any cloth they sat on, touched, or used before they went. i.e. blanket, your
dirty shirt from three days ago, their bedding cover, etc. It helps get their
"real" smell back.

Give it a good week to return to normal. Sometimes a little less, sometimes a
little more.

Contrary to popular opinion, the plural of 'anecdote' is
not 'fact'.

They just feel bad. Put yourself in their places! Patience and tlc.

They are simply reacting to each other because they all smell like the
vet.  They will be fine in a couple of days.

You're a good cat mom. Keep us posted on how those girls are doing. And
maybe post some pics, we love pics! Kittens make my day.

Thanks Mary! This is my first time with multiples, I've been a one
kitty mom all my life.

Yesterday night I went to get pain killer and pheremon dispenser from
the vet and they're at least able to pass by one another today without
it being a major event sending them all into a fray.

Ahh, I see! You're in for a treat then. I only wish I could have sibling
kittens--a friend of mine does, and the way they nest together is so cute. I
have never actually raised a cat from a kitten, always adopted adults.

Great to hear. I hope this is the most traumatic vet visit they ever have to
have.

OMG! They're totally adorable. I LOVE the last one especially! Lucky you,
lucky them.

Yes - the nesting! We're back to normal tonight and Priscilla was
sucking on Jasmine's ear as usual. I'm so so relieved and so grateful
for your help and support. Denise
