We have a Persian of unknown age who has developed a dark spot on his
right eye, not opaque, slightly off-center and perhaps a quarter inch
in diameter.  A week or so ago, he kept this eye closed for a few
days.  There was no such darkening before then.  We will take him to
the vet if it persists, but does anyone have a thought as to what it
could be?

I have no ideas as to the cause, but please get this cat to a vet
immediately.  Do not wait to see "if it persists."  Irreparable damage could
be done to your cat's vision in the meantime.
