Our cat has ongoing constipation problems, which flare up every few months.
She's been to the vet twice in the past couple of years to have this
invetsigated. Apparently she has very small kidneys and possibly megacolon.
Her stools are always very small and hard. She has fairly long dense fur and
sheds quite a bit, although she is brushed almost daily.

We give her propulsid and lactulose when her condition flares up. But I'm
wondering if there is more preventative solution. She prefers dry food over
wet food, does not drink much water and won't eat food that has anything
added like metamucil. She is a non dairy cat and won't touch canned pumpkin.
But what about baby food or some of the dry food additives (gravy) will
these help?

If she will eat baby food mixed with her dry that will get more moisture
into her and might even get her interested in wet food eventually. Worth a
try. Make sure there is no onion powder in the baby food.

Thanks Karen.

I'll try but she's pretty picky about her food.

What's the sccop on the drinkwells? Just a gadget or will they encourage the
cat to drink more?

Depends on the cat. Cats that are fasinated with faucets usually love them.
I have a petmate. I got it so Grant would drink more. He didn't start using
it until the motor died. With him, I put water dishes all over the place. It
reminds him to drink. another trick is to put some water dishes raised up a
bit. Either get a raised one or put it on a book. And use different types of
bowls, glass, poreclain, metal. It's odd, but there are favored locations.
At any rate I have one bowl in each room to encourage as much drinking as
possible. It seems to work.

Thanks,

Laziness could be a factor. Cali would rather sleep that get up to drink or
use the box. I think she's part Camel, drinks and pees about once a day.
We've tried had feeding her water, which did not seem to work, but she will
occasionally eat meat this way.

If only she took bathroom breaks like our younger cat, we'd need a second
garbage bag every week.

I keep a drinkwell in the bathroom and a regular water bowl in our
bedroom. The cats love both. We have hard water where we live so our
vet recommends that we use, which we do, distilled bottled water which
we buy by the gallon.

Thanks Terri, the girls get filtered water now, and only the young cat
(Smokey) likes faucets.

Cali's been to the box (got more lactulose from the pharmacy), but she has
not really perked up. So she may be off to TED tomorrow.
