Jackie is home after having all her teeth removed. Her mouth doesn't
stink anymore and she is eating the normal mush but I do crush it well
for her if it needs it. She always would eat almost any canned food
and is currently getting Wellness and Science Diet plus some Trader
Joe.

She is lying on the floor a lot instead of her more usual places but
she is also on Fentynal (sp?) which is a pretty strong pain killer. I
guess she is just a bit high.

I'm supposed to take off her Fentynal patch on Monday. I guess then
I'll find out if she is in pain.

She is no longer drooling, nor is the tongue hanging out. I haven't
found out if the diarrhea is over yet. One can only hope.

Well, if all goes well, perhaps Jackie Cat has a new lease on life.

Fingers & toes all crossed!  At the very least, her mouth is going to feel a
*whole* lot better, but I bet it'll be more general than that, health
improvement-wise.

She's so lucky to have you. I imagine it will be a great relief to her when
she is again fully herself and off the pain meds, to be free of those bad
teeth. I hope she heals well and that her stomach problems clear up too.

How old is Jackie?  Did you go to your normal vet or veterinary dental
specialist?  What was the cost of the total procedure?

I'm happy to hear Jackie Cat is doing better.  Hope she has a speedy
recovery.  I know the decision to give her the operation wasn't easy.
It's not the procedure to extract the teeth, but the anesthesia which
always makes everyone nervous.

We don't know her age, we're guessing maybe 12 or 13. I just adopted
her a few months ago because she looked miserable in the pet shop.
Absolutely the saddest eyes I ever saw on any living thing. I couldn't
stand it.

She went to the specialty vet for the extraction
(http://www.vetspecialist.com) on the recommendation of my regular
vet. Yes, we were very concerned about the anesthesia because she was
in such poor general health but she was starting to really go downhill
and we didn't have much of a choice. But they had no trouble pulling
her through that.

The cost was $1077, and that didn't include the $600 for the actual
dental work. That he did for nothing because he felt that someone who
adopted a sick cat deserved a break. Frankly, at $1700, Jackie might
be dead. That is a lot of money to invest in a cat that limps and is
in very bad shape. Still, it is likely that this will cure her myriad
health problems.

The whole concept of spending that kind of money is something that
we're all facing. I spent over $4000 on a previous cat (Nico the
Wonder Cat) and he only lived a few more months. I vowed that I would
not do that again, even for a favorite cat. I'm by no means sure that
I did him any favors.

So, it will be another few years before I get a HDTV. I'll live. So
will she.

Oh, I hope so.  Glad she is home and I'm sure she will be feeling much better
soon.

I think Jackie *will* have a new lease on life. I think you'll see an amazing
difference. My friend's cat had all his teeth pulled, and you could sure tell
the difference in him. Never slowed down his eating, either.

The vet said that I might have to get baby food (didn't mention
anything about onions and I was too busy to ask about it) but Jackie
is having no problem with the regular stuff. It's pretty much
pulverized anyway.

That sounds exactly like my friend's cat. He was one of those cats who really
likes to eat! There was also a remarkable difference in his general
behavior--you could tell how much better he felt. Good luck. I've been
following Jackie's story. I used to have a cat named Jacky, and we called him
Jacky Cat, too.

I was looking down at Jackie today and noticed that she looked pretty
plump. She ate almost 4 oz last night, which is equivalent to me
eating 7 1/2 lbs. You're right, she always ate a lot but now it
appears to be sticking. And she gets food in the morning also. All I
can tell by my scale is that she is somewhere around 6 lbs but I think
it is going up pretty fast.

I guess not having to fight a raging infection is really helping her
all around. I can't tell for sure yet but it appears that her poops
are firmer, certainly not just diarrhea. And she isn't leaving those
occasional brown spots around the house. Maybe I can remove those
covers I put on the pillows (there's a nice mental image).

I removed the fentaynl (sp?) patch last night so today is her first
day with no pain killer. Didn't seem to affect her eating ability this
morning.

She also will eat almost any of the healthy foods. I've been giving
her MaxCat and Wellness and a whole bunch that I've never even heard
of before but are carried by a local pet shop. Now if only I could get
the boys to eat healthy.

I am concerned that her rear legs are weak and that putting on weight
quickly will cause her problems. Actually I think any quick changes to
the body probably aren't a good idea so I'll mention it to the vet. It
would be just too funny if I have to put her on a diet.
