Hi Group,
I just had new carpet installed in my home, and my cat has adopted the
corner of my livingroom to poop in. There is no urine smell, just poop.
She has a litterbox and it seems she is also using it.
When this started, I immediately cleaned the litterbox, and whenever I
saw her sniffing around that corner, I would pick her up and bring her
to her litterbox.
I bought a product called No-Go, and have used it on the areas she has
soiled, and I also have Natures Miracle, and will be trying that too.
I don't know that this is due to the carpet being new, or if it could
be her way to let us know she wasn't happy that we took a 3 day vacation
without her....
nevertheless, this isn't very pleasant.
I would rather not put a litter box down in my livingroom....anyone
know any other tricks to stop this?

She should have two litter boxes. Some cats like to poop in one and pee in
the other.

First - vet check. Sudden changes in behavior, especially litterbox habits
(or lack thereof) are often a sign that the cat isn't feeling well. For
example, a cat with a urinary infection begins to associate the box with
pain, so starts going potty elsewhere. Your kitty might have a condition that
makes her hurt when she defecates, so she's avoiding the box. Anything from
IBD to worms can cause pain when defecating, so the vet needs to check the
cat out. Bring a stool sample with you. I've not really heard of a URI
causing defecation problems (it's usually urination), but it's certainly
possible.
After a clean bill of health...Put a second box somewhere besides the living
room, if you really don't want one there. Some cats prefer to use one box for
#1 and one for #2. You may have to start with the box there, then move it
when she's using it consistently. Don't just up and take it to another room,
though. Move it a few feet at a time until it's where you want it, over the
course of a week or so.
It may even simply be that she doesn't like something about the location of
her current box. Has the carpet changed there, too? Perhaps she feels unsafe,
so chooses to go to the bathroom in a location where she feels safer (more or
less open, whatever).

I bet it is the "new" carpet smell. Can you get it steam cleaned? It might
get that chemical smell out of it.

My thoughts too, but I would not use shampoo in the steamer as that
had been the source of allergy caused excessive licking in one of my
cats. Using straight water get a carpet clean without the soap, and in
fact a previously cleaned carpet will still produce suds when cleaning
with straight water. A brand new carpet will in fact get dirty quicker
when soap residue is in the fibers because soap is sticky.

I'm super happy with my Bissell upright power cleaner from Walmart. 98 bucks
and that would work great for getting the "new" smell out.

Hey! I bought the same one. (Don't we both have a Hoover Wind Tunnel, too?) The
*really* cool thing about it is, it's so lightweight and easy to use, it's not
a major undertaking to clean a small area or a whole room. (I don't have stock
in Bissell. But anything to make life easier for a cat owner!)

Same here. It just works slick. And it balls up the hair on my oriental rug
so I can get it relatively hair free every few months.
