Since we've been talking about shedding, I have a question.  I noticed my
little short-haired tortie girl had two mats in her coat today.  One I was
able to break up with my fingers, but the other one I had to cut out.  I
gave her a thorough brushing afterwards.  I've never seen a short-haired
kitty (except for some strays) have mats before.  I admit, I am not the most
dilligent brusher.  She also has dandruff.  Before I go out and buy
Derma-caps, is flax seed oil roughly the same thing?  I had bought some flax
seed oil capsules for myself.  I was wondering if I could break open the
capsules and add it to the cats' canned food.

No. Dermcaps provide omega 3 fatty acids from fish body oils.  Cats are
better able to utilize omega 3 in this form than in the form of flax seed
oil.
