any ideas on where to find a plastic container thats 22"x22+?  (we can go up
to 22x30 or so) suitable for a litterbox?  we're adding an extra member to
the family shortly and would like to expand the bathroom :).  thanks!

Try looking at rubbermaid storage containers.

Rather than getting a bigger litter box, it would be better to get one
or two additional boxes.  Many cats don't like to share.  I have three
boxes for two cats.

I personally use an ordinary child's wading pool, that you can get at
Wal-Mart.  now is the perfect time to get one as they are on clearance.

that being said, you might have problems with one litter box, as a lot of
cats are fussy and don't want to walk over someone else's mess to do their
duty, and might find your bed or the rug acceptable.  I'd wait and see how
the two get along before asking them to use a communal restroom.

its actually the four :).  three of them share one box now, we're adding a
kitten.  we're only in a 4 room apartment, so we're pretty limited on space
for an additional box.  just the location where we have the box now (under
the stairs to the second floor) has enough room for a larger box.

They sell dog litter boxes this size at Petco and PetsMart.

Listen up, a.shole. If you actually killed that cat you are no
better than the boys who killed the six puppies with the
firecrackers. If you were trying to get a rise out of
us, it's not funny and you are still an a.shole. My first
instincts about you appear to have been right, in
either case. It's coming back at you, boy. But you
know that's how it works. Good luck with that.
I hope you're ready for the next thing that
wants in through the screen door.

I responded to the first place I saw this a.shole posting
this morning--because he had conveniently sidestepped
the questions about whether or not he killed this cat. But thank you for
your concern. :'')

actually you responded to and quoted me, which is why you got my attention.
the guy who wrote about killing a cat was RobZip and has not posted to this
thread.  I'm Rob without the Zip, and while I might indeed be an a.shole it
has nothing to do with being mean to cats or other animals :).  My 3, soon
to be 4 cats are my family and are treated as such (actually in many cases
they are probably treated better than my human family :)).

You will definitely want at least two boxes with four cats. I have three
cats in a one bedroom and have two boxes. I put an office mat down in the
corner of the bedroom and put one box there with a privacy screen and keep
it very clean. The other is in the bathroom. Visitors have to deal with it,
but again, I keep it very clean. I would sure want two.

I got a bigger litterbox from Petsmart to use as I now have 3 cats in the
household. They have no problems sharing it. It is a bit deeper than the one
being used before. I wanted a bigger one but this was the largest that they
had.

I use a mortar-mixing tray from Home Depot, which is 26" x 19" and
6" deep, and very sturdy plastic like a litterbox.  I think it cost
about five dollars.

The sides slope out from the bottom, which solved the problem of one
cat backing up to the end or corner of the box, and managing to pee
over the edge half the time.  Before, I had the litterbox inside a
plastic storage box, but it was very messy to clean up the escaped pee
in the outer box (storage boxes aren't really made sturdy enough any
more to use by themselves for long).  With the angle of the sides of
the mortar tray, he can back up his feet to the edge and still pee
inside the box.
