Will the Fur Grow Back?

To do the ultrasound they shaved a large part of Buddha's chest--her whole
big beautiful white bib and then some. Now when she relaxes on her back it
looks like a naked holstein face looking up from her chest.

Cheeky's spay shave never grew back and it has been three years. Will Buddha
get her thick and velvety short hair back?

Wow - that's odd, re: her shaved spay spot not growing back; my female cats
all grew back their hair where they were shaved.  I'd assume it - & the
ultrasound shaving - would grow back normally.  (Debbie grew back her hair
after her ultrasound.)

Good to know. I have a digital camera now but have
not had the time to learn to use it. Once I do and get a
little free web page somewhere I plan to take and post
photos of these cats. Cheeks will throw back one
leg like a regular harlot when she wants her tummy
rubbed. Then you can see the little pink patch. I guess
it is weird. She's just a regular tabby. Maybe she just
never had much fur there.

BTW, Buddha is feeling so much better. It's like she
knows I have been taking care of her, regardless
of how much she hates the vet. She keeps seeking
me out. Last night she lay on my chest while I watched
TV and purred her head off. (At 13 lbs she felt like
a great big baby!) Then we had some popcorn. She
loves it, but I have to break off just the white part,
none of that brown seedy stuff for her!

When Caley came back from the hospital after chewing on a AAA battery
(Keep batteries away from your cats!!!) she climbed up on me in bed,
crawled close to my face, and held my chin lightly in her jaws, all the
while purring away.  It was so sweet.  She was totally zonked on pain
meds for the burn in her mouth.  I held her for what seemed like hours,
not moving a muscle.  I think she fell asleep there.  When she finally
moved, I was able to move also, and I was pretty cramped, but no way was
I going to disturb her.

To repeat:  Keep batteries away from your cats!!!  She got a nasty
chemical burn, but was very lucky that none got into her stomach.

It will.  It won't start growing again right away depending on what stage of
the growth cycle the fur is in.  Buddy had an US 2.5 years ago and his fur
was all grown back about 8 weeks later.  He is having another one on Monday
and he'll hate it.  He tried to lick his fur back in for a week after the
last one, then he gave up.

When my cat had an ultrasound, they did not shave him.  Said it wasn't
necessary.  I guess every vet is different.

I'm sure the fur will grow back, just may take a few months.

Proabably also depends on the length of the cat's fur, & how thick it is in
the area that's scanned.  My cat who had the ultrasound - & was shaved - had
long hair.

I hope so. Buddha has short, very plushy, velvety jet black fur with white
"tuxedo" markings. Her whole bib is gone. :-(

Mary, when my cat had back surgery, his whole backside had to be shaved.  It
grew back.....just took awhile.

Now I'm dealing with my other cat who had to have the last 3-4 inches of his
tail shaved when he got his tail caught in a door.  It's been just over a
month, and the fur is coming back oh so slowly!  And he has such a beautiful
tail!

Oh my! What was wrong with his back? I don't think I have ever heard of a
cat that had back surgery.

Poor baby, and that must have hurt!
blkcatgal - 15 Aug 2004 22:57 GMT
He had a spinal compression, probably caused by arthritis in his back.  Very
rare for a cat.  The orthopedic surgeon that did the surgery had never
operated on a cat before for this.  But my cat is doing okay -- his back
still bothers him some, but he's doing fine.

belly fur is often thinner than most areas.  any chance its just that? if
she really didn't grow her fur back, then a trip to the vet would be in
order, as that is out of the norm.

Jack, a dmh, had a patch shaved on his shoulder to have a cyst removed.  it
has taken quite a while, but finally it looks normal again.  my short haired
elder cat has fur shaved often for different things, and hers grows back
very quickly.

For Cheeks? Yes, it might be. She is a typical mackeral tabby, fur not
course or fine just normal. Her belly, however, is naked and pink, and the
shave lines are still there. She likes it petted and I like to kiss it. :)

She goes regularly and they have never said anything. But it is definitely
naked. Feels like a baby Shar Pei's belly.

Well, good, maybe Boo's will too. She is nine. I'm so happy her heart is
okay, it doesn't really matter about the fur, but it would be nice to have
it grow back.
