I'm very happy to report that TK's almost at the 5 month mark of his 6 month rabies
quarantine and is doing fine. So at the 5 month mark, he's due for his first rabies
shot. My understanding is that after 5 months his chance of developing rabies is
near zero and the 6th month is mostly to give him time to develop immunity and
add another safety margin to the quarantine.
So, at this point we have a couple of options.
1) He can get a shot of Purevax now but has to get the shot with an adjuvant in
6 months to be covered for 3 years.
2) He can get a shot with an adjuvant now and in 6 months to be covered for 3
years.
3) He can get the Purevax now, and annually after that.
A rabies shot is required in this State.
I like the Purevax since it seems to minimize the sarcoma risk but the live virus
concerns me. And the stuff is still fairly new with limited long term data (I believe).
I like the 3 year immunization but have the sarcoma worries.
So I'm torn.
Can anyone offer any advice, references, or personal experiences with any of
these approaches.
Right now, I'm tending to lean toward the annual Purevax vaccination.
Thanks

My cat's have been getting purevax and it seems to do well. Sugar is touchy
about vacs, and can become ill for a couple of days, but it does not seem to
matter if it is purevax or not. Since they form bad lumps with regular vacs
we switched to purevax and, indeed, they did not form lumps from it.
