Hi All,
My cat - Tuo-Te - is getting on in years, and my vet has recommended
he go on Potassium supplements to curb his early stage kidney failure.
The supplements are $40 Canadian for a 2 month supply.
I've been thinking - if my chemistry is correct, Potassium is an
element.
It is also available in powder form for human consumption in capsule
form. I saw one place selling it for $8 for 100 capsules. It was a
natural foods store, so who knows what the ingredients REALLY were.
Has anyone had experience using alternative sources of Potassium for
their cat? Was it just as good as the stuff at the vet?
Regards,
NSP

I haven't used potassium, but I have used other supplements from the health
food store. In my experience, I find the ones from the health food store are
higher quality than the vet brands. Just be careful what dose you give your
cat. Figure a supplement dose is for a 150 pound human, then figure a cat is
let's say 10 pounds, so the dose would be 1/15 of the human dose. But, you
should always check with your vet first to make sure you are giving the correct
dosage, or you could end up with a nutritional imbalance.

And, acc. to what my vet told me at the time, an overload of K would *not*
be a good thing.

I used a potassium supplement precscribed by mthe vet - Tumil-K - for one of
my cats who was in chronic renal failure. It greatly helped her muscle
coordination. However, I wouldn't fool around w/ the integrity of the
supplement (not knowing what's actually in it), or the dosage.
I don't remember the cost of the Tumil-K, but it certainly wasn't one of her
pricier meds. (Procrit, for anemia, took *that* prize! But hey, it also
worked.)
