I emailed many of you, and in another group. Shadow passed away today
after 2 years since his IBD diagnosis, and FeLV contraction. This
morning his stomach or something burst and he vomited blood and clots
and mucous. It seemed to come out of the blue since he seemed fine
last night. This weekend, though, he started laying on the kitchen
floor and in the hall; not his normal laying places. Even in the
midst of the vomiting blood, he tried to eat, but couldnt't take a
bite. Prednisone. It made him piggy. I think his vet wanted to do
more, but I told Shadow before that I wouldn't put him through tests,
and treatments, and "lets try this" any more, and his eyes told me it
was time. His vet held my hand when he slipped away.

That is such a beautiful and true sentiment ML.

Yes, it really is.

FYI    When I was 12 years old (300 years ago) I found the poem in my
grandmothers scrapbook.  I treasured it because I didn't know her.
She died when I was 3 years old.  The only memory I have of her is
feet and long skirt handing me some measuring spoons to play with.

Did she write it? In any case I'd love to read the entire thing.
Karen - 14 Jul 2004 15:40 GMT
I found the whole thing.

SOME TIME
"Some time, when all life's lessons have been learned,
And sun and stars for evermore have set,
The things which our weak judgment here has spurned,
The things o'er which we grieved with lashes wet,
Will flash before us out of life's dark night,
As stars shine most in deeper tints of blue;
And we shall see how all God's plans were right,
And how what seemed reproof was love most true.

"And we shall see that while we frown and sigh,
God's plans go on as best for you and me:
How, when we called, He heeded not our cry,
Because His wisdom to the end could see.
And e'en as prudent parents disallow
Too much of sweet to craving babyhood,
So God, perhaps, is keeping from us now
Life's sweetest things because it seemeth good.

"And if, sometimes, comingled with life's wine,
We find the wormwood, and rebel and shrink,
Be sure a wiser hand than yours or mine
Pours out this portion for our lips to drink.
And if some friend we love is lying low,
Where human kisses cannot reach his face,
Oh, do not blame the loving Father so,
But bear your sorrow with obedient grace.

"And you shall shortly know that lengthened breath
Is not the sweetest gift God sends his friends;
And that, sometimes, the sable pall of death
Conceals the fairest boon His love can send.
If we could push ajar the gates of life,
And stand within, and all God's working see,
We might interpret all this doubt and strife,
And for each mystery find a key.

"But not today. Then be content, poor heart;
God's plans, like lilies pure and white, unfold.
We must not tear the close-shut leaves apart --
Time will reveal the calyxes of gold.
And if, through patient toil, we reach the land
Where tired feet, with sandals loose, may rest, --
When we shall clearly know and understand, --
I think that we will say that 'God knew best.'"

Karen:  I find it remarkable that you found this old poem.  My
grandmother, who died in 1921 had it in her scrapbook.  There were
only two differences:  The author was written as Mary Louise Riley
Smith  (I assume part of the Joseph Smith family) .  Then the word
"calyxes) was instead "cups of gold".   Thanks and purrs for you and
your fur family.   MLB

Thank you Mary. My grief makes any animosity null and void, and I
really don't want to argue with you anymore. I watched my beloved
cat die, that in itself supercedes anything else. Your condolences
mean a lot to me. I only xposted the vet group because some of
those guys read many of my messages when he was so sick. I thought
his final demise and symptoms might help someone.

Thank you, Cheryl, I'm crying for both of you. It's very hard. I hope your
good memories will soothe you and that time will ease the pain.

I only snipped because they don't know me.

Cheryl,

I am very sorry to hear this.

And God asked the feline spirit
Are you ready to come home?
Oh, yes, quite so, replied the precious soul
And, as a cat, you know I am most able
To decide anything for myself.

Are you coming then? asked God.
Soon, replied the whiskered angel
But I must come slowly
For my human friends are troubled
For you see, they need me, quite certainly.

But don't they understand? asked God
That you'll never leave them?
That your souls are intertwined. For all eternity?
That nothing is created or destroyed?
It just is....forever and ever and ever.

Eventually they will understand,
Replied the glorious cat
For I will whisper into their hearts
That I am always with them
I just am....forever and ever and ever.

I'm sorry, Cheryl. Shadow sounded like such a little trooper.

Some of our little friends have to leave us too early, but it sounds
like your guy had a great life with you.

Our Bob-cat will be there to welcome him to the place where cats can eat
all day and not feel bad.

Take care of yourself,

Rhonda

Shadow.  My heart goes out to you.  He knows how much you love him.

Oh Cheryl, I am so very sad to read this. Hopefully you can find solace
in knowing that you really went to the nth degree for Shadow and, in the
end, stayed true to your promise to him and gave him the loving gift of
rest. Take good care of yourself.

loving home.

Cheryl,

I remember you and Shadow from when he was so sick, and I am so
sad to hear this.  Even sadder than usual, if that is possible.
What a good cat slave you have been for this little trooper.

I'm sorry. :-(    Otoh, I'm glad he felt relatively well, right up till the
end, esp. considering all that he'd been through when he had fatty liver
disease.  Shadow was certainly one well-loved-&-well-taken-care-of cat!
