hi,
Our kitten, (Augie, siamese, 13 wks.) has some stinky poop! I cannot
describe just how horrible it smells. It permeates through the house
and Augies fur and but. Yuck. The smell is made worse since Augie has
mild Cerebellum Hyperplasia (crazy motor function and balance
disability) and cannot cover his poop properly, or clean himself
especially well (tho he does try!). He also has chronic diarrhea, that
since being treated with Amoxicillin and a Eukanuba Low Residue
vet-prescribed diet, is clearing up. Yes, he's been to the vet and
tested for other possiblities, but there are none. It still
smells...bad.
Couple questions regarding supplements and litter:
1. Is there a good supplement, maybe some type of enzyme, that you
have tried or heard good things about?
2. What about a better odor absorbing litter or litter supplement?
There are so many, and so many are so expensive that I don't want to
experiment first without reccommendation. Right now we use Fresh Step
mixed with some feline pine (our oldest cat will not use just feline
pine, he'll go right outside of the boxes first). Since the addition
of Augie a month ago, I've been adding some baking soda to the mix -
not doing the trick. We have two litter boxes and I normally clean
each twice a day...now I have to clean the box and Augie (with pet
wipes) whenever I catch Augie doing his duty (often), which is really
getting old.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions,
Amy

Hi Amy,
If it were my cat, I would feed a better quality one that Eukanuba, maybe
something like Wellness, Nature's Variety, Felidae or Petguard. You could also
add a probiotic to his food. Wysong makes one called F-Biotic. I use Swheat
Scoop litter which is made from wheat, all natural and no chemical additives.
If Augie were my cat, I would take him to a holistic vet. I have a cat with
asthma and I took her to a good holistic vet who helped me with her diet and
using natural medications. She is doing so good now :)

Personally, I wouldn't mess with his food *while* trying to clear up the
diarreha. Once his tummy evens out, I bet the stink should get better.

A few ideas from the trenches. First off, I was able to train my five
month old kitten to cover his poop quite quickly. I just put him in the
litter box gently and used his paw (gently) to scratch over it. Aside
from gagging at standing over the foul pile, it was really quite simple.
I suggest that your cat, no matter how disabled, ought to be able to
manage some version of this - if you show him how.

Could it be medication? Maybe it'll pass.
What about access to plants? I think my cat was getting into the
asparagus fern and the philodendron and removing those seemed to help.
