OK, this really has me wondering. From the other thread, Dally's vet says 4
BMs a day is normal. Now, I'm pretty positive my cats AT MOST *MIGHT* have
two a day and very ocassionally a day is skipped. I was reading a page on
megacolon just now and they suggest "adjusting dosage of laxative so cat has
bowel movement at least every other day", so this also leads me to think
it's normal to have maybe one BM a day for a cat. What do others find is
normal for their cats?

Cheeky, free-fed dry but never finishing even a cup a day, plus 1.5
three-ounce cans of Fancy Feast (not my fault she LOVES it and I can't bear
to take it away--yet!) does two every day and on occasion three. I don't
clean Buddha's box often enough to know--my husband takes care of hers.

As I said above--Gnarly did maybe one bm a day on dry Science Diet
Maintenance.

One/day per cat.

Mine eats 1 small tin of Nutro canned and free feed kibble (Wellness Lite)
and has a BM once a day and pees twice.

My one cat has one per day.  Almost like clock-work, same time every day.
My other cat goes at least once a day, sometimes twice a day.  I also think
that 4 times a day is a bit excessive and is not the norm.  I'll wait to see
what others say.

My 2 guys average about 1 a day. They eat Hills Prescription ID wet
with a little ID dry for snacks.

When they had regular Hills SD canned my one cat had much bigger
stools but still went once a day generally.

But was frequency greater when they were under a year old?

You may have a point there but I think 4 times is a bit much. I think
it's diet related and as long as the stools look normal I wouldn't
make too much of a big deal out of it.

Maybe he is marking his territory since you let visitors use that
bathroom.

Didn't have Lucy here til she was 2; but  in the 5 years since, never
more than once, and sometimes  misses a day. Only 8 pounds, eats 95%
canned plua a little ground up dry mixed in. Eats about 1 1/3 cans a
day.

Mine eat mostly canned too. I wonder if that is a factor. 70% water and the
rest mostly usable nutrition. Could be less waste than with dry.

The explosive diarrhea thing was a one time thing but his stools are
often soft, maybe half the time.  It's been consistant since I got him -
they've been runny on a few occasions, but they're well-formed as often
as they're soft: usually during the same day.

I still clean his litter boxes out every day, but I gave up trying to
keep his boxes completely free of all clumps (which was one idea why he
might not be using his litter boxes) and went back to leaving at least
one clump in there so he knows where he's supposed to go.  That not only
seems to not bother him, but I was truly overwhelmed by cleaning his
litterboxes four or five times a day.

> Maybe he is marking his territory since you let visitors use that

Certainly possible.

By the way, the bathroom door was inadvertantly left open three times
today and the cat didn't get in any of the three times.  I suspect he
was just elsewhere when the opportunity arose, though.  But each time I
saw the door open I reacted with a sinking heart, sure there was another
present.  I closed it each time.  I think the old warped wood door
(they're from the 1880's) are hard to close tightly.  And if it isn't
closed tightly the cat noses his way in.

I agree that keeping the door closed is an expedient idea.  I just don't
agree that I can declare the solution that I'll just keep the door
closed and pick up sh.t whenever any of a dozen people don't do it
right.  But I'll certainly look into door closers.

This still makes me think possible problem with him and his food. You said
you feed dry, but you don't free feed. Could you try the canned Wellness
kitten food? Honest, it could be a factor.

Another thing I didn't mention is that I usually drizzle water over his
dry kibble.

I'm not dismissing your ideas - I'll look into wet food.  I have wet
food in the house, but I tend not to feed it for a variety of reasons
that made sense to me that don't relate to his BM's.  But I can re-evaluate.

What would those reasons be? Health-wise, there's no reason not to feed wet
food. Even if you don't want to feed it exclusively, a 50-50 mix with dry is
better than dry all the time.

I've discussed with Megan the food issue and I'm going to take her
advice.  I'm really not prepared to debate the wet/dry debate with you
guys right now.

Both my previous cat and current one had/have BM's once a day. So for me -
one BM a day is normal.

Mine each go once a day, on average. Skipping a day is not overly
unusual for the girls. For my boy, going twice a day is also not overly
unusual. Not surprisingly, my boy eats more than my girls.

The girls went more when they were kittens, though. Like 2 or 3 times a
day. I adopted my boy as an adult, so I couldn't say about him.

Correction, she didn't seem concerned about it.  I believe she made some
off-hand comment about it being normal for kittens.

"Normal" is a pretty loaded term.  More like "within the range of
normal" would be a more reasonable interpretation.

I cleaned out his litterbox last night before going to bed, just as I do
every night.  Three distinct BM's, one I'm not sure about (please don't
make me go into details) and five or six urine clumps.  That was in 24
hours across two litter boxes AND he had sh.t on the floor the prior
evening.

Frankly, I'm stunned by this, too.  It's like it's his hobby or
something.  My former cat had two litter boxes and generally went
outside - I cleaned the boxes twice a week at most.  Odin is an indoor
cat and I figured maybe our older cat just went outside more than I
suspected.

Do you have any children?  You learn early that they're all different.
Just because 90 people here pipe up and say their cats go once a day
doesn't mean my kitten is - what?  I mean, what are you getting at?
That's he's ill in ways that you've discovered that the vet hasn't?
That I'm a pathological liar/troll because this couldn't be true?  I
mean I don't know what your point is.

I think karen was just expounding on the informal survey that was
being taken in this thread. In other words 1 BM a day is considered
typical. Diets have also been discussed and dry food I believe results
in more voluminous stools. Also the consensus is that kittens probably
go more often than adults. Also no 2 cats are alike.

No, I started this because I was curious what does fall in the normal range.
It's soemthing I hadn't considered before. Though your thread made me wonder
about this, the universe does not revolve around you alone. This thread is
because I WONDER WHAT PEOPLES EXPERIENCE WITH NUMBER OF BM'S IN THEIR CATS
ARE.  End of story.

Kittens eat more food, and more frequently, so I would expect them
to go more frequently than adult cats.

I don't know what the range of normal is for adult cats, but I imagine
it is similar to the range for adult humans, and depends somewhat
on diet.  Normal bowel function for adult humans is anywhere from 3
times a day to 3 times a week.  Dry food produces a larger volume of
waste than canned.

times a week.

This is true. And I don't believe that one time a day is normal for an
average adult cat. I've cleaned cat boxes for six cats who went more than
once a day. Nobody can be that unlucky.

Most cats sh.t AM and PM.  Believe me, I have cleaned up enough cat
sh.t over the years to have made this observation.
