Seem I have a stray that wants to move in. I already have 5 cats so its out of
the question. Its been hanging around on my back deck day and night for a few
days. Its very friendly and comes running to me every time I walk out the door
and follows me all around the yard when I'm out there. So, what does one do
with a stray cat thats looking for a home? She is more than welcome to live in
my back yard and I would have no problem with feeding her daily but here in RI
USA we get some pretty cold winters. If she were to need veterinary care she
would be on her own. My priorities are with my 5 other cats one of which just
cost me $1000 for a urinary blockage. So any suggestions on what to do about
her? Anyone want a nice friendly cat?

Well, I would at least be feeding her meantime while you think of what to do
for a permanent solution. Are you sure she's stray and not lost? How about
some flyers up on the utility poles in your neighborhood? Call your local
shelter and see if someone has reported a lost cat of her description and look
in the paper in the lost and found. Some papers allow free found ads. Ask
your neighbors and your mailman, if you ever see him, if they know whose cat it
is. If all fails, contact a local no-kill shelter and see if they will take
her. It doesn't have to be immediately if they don't have room right now since
winter is a few months away. But if she's a female, you might wind up with
kittens. Does she look like she is thin and has been on her own for awhile or
just recently lost? She's friendly so she probably had or has a home. It will
take some phone calls and effort on your part but you can probably get her
homed or into a no-kill shelter if you work at it. Call a rescue group, look
on the internet if you don't know of any in your area or ask your humane
socety. The rescue group can probably spay her, at least. But feed her for
now and keep her friendly so you can get her a home. Ask everyone you know if
they would like a cat. Start with your neighbors and you may find her home.

Hi Tony,
$1000 for a blockage is rather a lot. If it was struvite crystals then this
stuff is the answer....
http://store.yahoo.com/healthypetscom/me5ta.html
Its the added ingredient to Hills prescription food that clears up the
problem. For an average cat two a day sprinkled on his food solves the
problem. Its usually only male cats that get the problem as females have a
far larger urethra.
as to the friendly stray, looks like number six has come in !!!
good luck

The $1000 included four days stay at the emergency hospital to get her kidney
levels back down to normal and about 4 weekly followup visits at my regular vet
to recheck the kidney levels and her bladder. Best guess by all invloved is it
started as a severe bladder infection.

ouch ! for a queen its unlikely to be crystals so my advice was poor. its a
worry when things happen like that, hope all is well now.
