attack of a crazy kitten

Shaina is in full hunting mode.  it's cute when she attacks all sorts
of inanimate objects that make noise, like paper and bags, even though
she is determined to destroy ALL paper and books in the house.  my
boyfriend has neat piles of important papers for school and research
and several times i saw them spread out all over the floor.  he said
that she did it.  the i saw her do it.  she jumps on them and the pile
slides all over.  she proceeds to the next pile.  then she gnaws on
them and tries to shred.  unfortunately, she does the same thing to my
arms and hands and no amount of screaming and hissing helps.  i mean
not at all.  i have to put her else where, or to another room so that
she can rape and pillage there.  she pats me nicely in the morning so
that i give her food, but if i don't go soon enough, she begins to
pounce, bite HARD and hold with her claws extended.  she does retract
them once i scream REALLY loud and hiss, but then she does the same
thing.  of course, my earrings, necklaces, straps and hair are all
potential victims of her furry wrath.
HELP!  she is a paper and arm shredder!
perhaps i should convince my boyfriend to bring a couple of
small-medium sized rats for her to kill.  ;(

Shaina is a baby and just like with a human baby you must baby proof (kitten
proof). Get your BF some inexpensive plastic storage bins with lids from
Walgreens and have him keep his papers in there. Stacks of papers are highly
attractive to kittens and young cats....even some olderones.  The biting
will stop if you just are consistent about keeping her from doing it. If it
happens ALL attention stops. Time out. Kitten goes into a little time out
(well kitten proofed) room for a few minutes. This WILL get associated after
a while and the behaviour will change. She is just a baby.

Paper on the floor is fair game. That's Buddha's favorite. She must lie on
anything that hits the floor for a while, as if to check it out.

Or anything that occupies the human(s) attention. I made the mistake
of trying to put some contact paper on a utility shelf yesterday. Now
it's the "Natasha enhanced contact-paper-covered utility shelf". It's
quite, erm, fuzzy.

heh

we played "catch your own human" game today.  i put out my arm and she
jumps.  i move my arm quickly enough so that she doesn't touch it.
she makes the most beautiful jumps!  after 5 min, or so, Shaina gave
up and just sat there and looked at me with her large, innocent, green
eyes.

I truly enjoy reading about how much better she's doing. Are you
enjoying having a kitten who *really* acts like a kitten? :-)

if humans were careless enough to leave anything on the floor it's
their problem. :)  the clothes are generally for lying down.  the
paper is for hunting and scattering.  i covered some of my BF's piles
of paper with a dinner tray for now.  we are lazy.

Better to cover them with a dinner tray than to move them, I've found.
Buddha gets such joy from lying on any paper she can find, it's hard to
deprive her. One thing that's funny about this cat (among many) is that she
takes such great satisfaction in the things she loves to do, it shows on her
face. Then when one tries to, say, move her from the piece of paper, she
"bitches" at one. It's a variation on the "MEH meh" sound but with a really
mean look on her face. She then stalks off throwing a hiss over her
shoulder. This cat has a real sense of entitlement. ;)

You may want to try the kitten-sized SoftPaws while she's going
through this stage.

Well, that puny kitten your roommate is taking will be about the same
size. ;-\

oh god, i hope she gets along with the baby!  she is not aggressive at
all. she just gets carried away when playing.  in the beginning of
play, she doesn't even extend her claws!
it's kinda hard to train her to play nice when my sister, who's
visiting, just loves an insane kitty and tells me "well, maybe you
should learn to take it, or put a sock on your hand".  now, i can
stand her claws and teeth for a while, but my limit is at the point
when she will draw blood, or elicit a genuine scream of pain.

Fear not, I'm sure she'll be fine with the still-to-young-to-be-
separated-from-its-mother kitten. :-)

Geez, you have all kinds of crazy people around you!

Tell your sister it's your cat, so your rules. No hand play.
