very stong urine odor

Our rescue litter left yesterday for PetSmart to find their forever homes.
This prompted a marathon clean up the kitty litter they scattered everywhere
session. I must have really gotten into the swing of things because I
decided to scoop the big guys litter while I was at it (a task that I gladly
leave for the dh usually) I started with the laundry room box that Isabelle
has recently shown a preference for. The box wasn't all that dirty. She had
used it twice since the last cleaning (judging by the number of large
clumps) but the smell was enough to gag a maggot. The last time I smelled
cat urine that strong it was from an unaltered male cat who sprayed next to
our front door (oh joy!).

What could cause the strong odor?

She's not acting like there is anything wrong other than not scarfing down
her food like it's the last supper any more. I attributed that to her not
really liking the new food though

She's due for shots so I'll be calling tomorrow to get her an vet
appointment.

Isabelle is spayed, correct? Was it strong ammonia smell, or strong
urea smell?

Yes, she was spayed when she was found as a stray. She was around 1 1/2 yr.
old when they found her.

What's urea smell like? Never really analyzed the smell of cat pee. The
other two boxes didn't have much of a smell - just the normal, mild, oh it's
a cat box I'm messing with smell. Her's could peel paint.

Urea is the "fresh pee" smell. Ammonia is what forms when urea breaks
down. If the urine in the box was strongly ammoniac, it may just be
that it had been sitting in the box for a while (perhaps none of the
cats have really been using the box much and the urine was a couple
of days old). Other than that, pee-stink ain't my thang. :-)

UTI, kidney malfunction, liver issues all come to mind - make sure
they do bloodwork and a urinalysis at the vet.

Good luck,

How old is Isabel?  I believe it can be a sign of kidney disease.  Better have
them do a urinalysis on her and maybe bloodwork.

I just read that it can be a symptom of a urinary tract infection also.

Oh, duh! You're right, and your post reminded me- extra-stinky pee
can indicate infection.
