New kitten - help

Prove It... - 23 Jun 2004 02:39 GMT
My SO and I recently recived a cat. It's a 7 month old neuterd male.
The problem I'm running into is that I work evenings and late nights,
and need to sleep in the morning. Of course a kitten would never let
this happen.
He likes to let you sleep till about 6am, then he will whine and run
around like an insane race car (getting into things that he normaly
won't get into), and generaly be a bad cat.
Even when I get up and play with him, and feed him, he still acts bad,
and whines. This goes on till about noon.

Other then that he is a very good cat, he doesn't get on stuff, he
doesn't whine. Any ideas why he would act this way at this time, and
how I can stop it (or move it to a better time)?

My guess is that the birds outside our windows get his attention and
he is acting up because of them...

Can you just shut him out of your bedroom and maybe wear earplugs?  He should
outgrow it but it's hard to break a kitten of their natural behavior.

I read that cats are diurnal, which apparently means that they are
most active at dawn and dusk. I've certainly noticed that they are
active at dawn.

Nothing much has worked for me but they do seem to outgrow it after a
few months. One still wakes me every morning to feed but once I feed
them he just sniffs it and walks away. Then I go back to bed.

I'd suggest getting a second cat to keep him occupied but while I
think that in general two cats are better than one, he's still going
to wake you.

Somehow I thought that would be the case. I would love to get two cats,
but we were lucky to get this one. I can't wait till he out grows it,
I'm tired of getting four or fewer hours of sleep.

Thanks for the reply.

Oops, you shouldn't have said that. Now you're going to get lots of
cat offers. Or offered cats. Whichever.

Offers are great, doesn't change the fact that we can't have two cats. :)

What I do is crawl out of bed, provide some food (and open the
window)and then go back to sleep for a few hours. Doesn't really wake
me up much. My husband can't tolerate being woken up by kitties in the
morning either, so he squirted her a few times, yelled and then
finally took to shutting her out of the bedroom. Now she is very
careful only to wake me up and not him :

I don't doubt this, but mine sure aren't. They are most active in the wee
hours, long before dawn.

Mine are spunkiest around 2:00 AM. Joyous.

One of Camille's favorite activities around that time of night is to
go to the closet that faces my bed and yank the door open. Why, you
might ask? Because it has one of those lights that comes on
automatically when the door is opened, and Camille just loooooves to
see the light come on.

Mommy, OTOH, doesn't.

It's so good to hear that she's feeling better, even if it does mean
that she has become a little fireplug. ;-)
