Kitten Sucking

I've had cat companions my whole life and I've never had a kitten do
this!  Sammy will "root" on every / any patch of bare skin on me that
she can find and then start slobbering and sucking (with her little
tongue stuck out of her mouth in the "down" position).  She makes VERY
loud sucking noises the whole while.  She'll suck my neck (the little
vampire!), my arms, my feet, my hands, (I finalyy stick my thumb in
front of her mouth just because that's less sensitiv than other parts
of my body ;>) - frantically pushing with her back legs and kneading
with her front paws like she is in competition with her brothers and
sisters for nourishment!  She was weaned rather early - six weeks -
but I've had other kittens even younger than that and none of them did
this.

Does anyone else have a cat who does this?  Is this something they
outgrow?  I've had to lock her in the bathroom with her food, water,
litter-box, toys, and bed every night just so I can get some sleep,
and I HATE doing this, I feel so guilty (even though she doesn't
complain or cry - well that makes me feel even worse!).

HELP!!!

Hugs,

CatNipped

One of the cats we had when I was a child did this, but to a lesser degree
than your Sammy. She never did outgrow it--but then she didn't live very
long, or I don't think she did. My parents were the old school
indoor/outdoor cat types, so she disappeared at about age six. I grew up
watching our cats stagger home and die under bushes after being hit by cars,
get poisoned by psycho neighbors, and that sort of thing.

I wonder if the suckling issue might be a case for one of
those kitty psychologists? They can't charge too much, can they? Might be
worth a shot since it has to be psychological.

My Jacob did the exact same thing as a kitten. Once he grew up, his
mouth just wouldn't get that kind of suction anymore, thankfully. He
grew out of it, for the most part, although he still occasionally
nuzzles my earlobe, eyebrow, neck or chin. <G>

the cat I had growing up did the same thing but on clothes.. he never out
grew it.. but then again, he wasn't the brightest bulb in the bunch.. he
drooled when he purred, and he used to "kill" the neighbor's clothes when
they hung out on the line and drag them home.

My current love, Jack did it as a kitten, and only did it for about six
months.  I always let him, and he eventually on his own did it less and
less.

It's not uncommon, especially in kittens who were weaned early, but
more often they suck fuzzy clothes than bare skin (woolsuckers).
My mother's cat was a woolsucker all his life, and I had one cat
that outgrew it eventually.  LeMieux did it when he was little,
but as he got larger, instead of actually sucking anything, he just
made sucking noises with his mouth while purring.  He just turned 13,
and I still wake up to the sound of sucky-face almost every day.

my kitten makes sucking noises when she sleeps, but that's about it.

Paintball (who will be two years old come August) used to do this a LOT--I
think it was her way of bonding with me.  I got her when she was ten weeks old,
and I think she decided I was her new mommy.  It's only been in the past three
months that it hasn't been her nightly 'before-bed' ritual, but she still does
it when she seems to need a little assurance.

Our cat is 4 years old and still does this occasionally.  He'll do this only
with a certain blanket and we do know that it gives him comfort and makes
him feel safe thats why we let him every once in awhile.  He really doesn't
like to be picked up or petted but when he's kneading and sucking he loves
it, so we both get something out of it.

My Aunt had a cat named Toby who was orphaned as a tiny kitten.
She used to feed him with piece of an old white cotton shirt that she
dipped into a milk and sugar mixture.
After he was weaned off of this, he never outgrew the cotton sucking
thing.
I remember going to visit her and wearing a cotton T shirt. This cat
would climb up on my chest and just lick, suck and knead the shirt.
After a while there would be this big wet spot on my shirt.
He was an old cat then, about 15 I guess he lived to be about 18 or 20
and never outgrew the cotton sucking, licking thing.
Although I did not get to see much of that cat this thread brought
back some pleasant memories.

Thank you all for your replies.  I've found a semi-solution to the
problem.  I found that when she starts this I can put her back paw in
front of her mouth and she will suck on that (the front paws won't do
because she uses those for kneading).  Also, she will sometimes suck
on her tail (at first I thought she went to sleep with her tail
sitting in her water dish when I saw it all wet one morning, but then
I found her sucking on it!).

Anyway, I shouldn't complain - she's also the sweetest little thing
I've ever known, real lovey-dovey with everyone.

I'm trying to leave her out for at least part of the night (until I
can't take any more, am loggy from lack of sleep, and have to put her
in the bathroom).  I'm just try to gently unsuction her from my skin
and offer her her paw instead! ;>  I'm going to try and get some
pictures of her doing this to post - it's sooooo cute.

Hugs,

Okay, that is the funniest thing I've heard in a long time. I want to
see this- you're saying that you stick her *rear* paw in front of her
mouth and she'll suck on it??? That is one goofy cat. :-D

Hey Catnipped, I have to cats and my little guy sucks all the time!  He roots
and sucks on anything that will sit still long enough.  We lock them out of
our room at night and they have free roam of the apartment.  I don't know if
he'll grow out of it or not, I've heard stories going both ways.  I did,
however, ask my vet about it and they oddly enough suggested a passifier.  I
haven't tried that yet, because I would like to break him of it, not
encourage it.  I have just started saying, "No" and if that doesn't work I
blow on him and he stops.  He'll eventually stop or jump down.  I think my
little guy does it because he was never weaned from his mom.  We got him at
three months old and he was still in a cage with his mom and all his siblings.
Good luck, just remember they're babies and they take lots of patience!

I just rescued my second kitten and was looking online to see if anyone has
ever had this same issue w/their kitten!  I was glad and surprised to see
that it might be pretty common.  My kitten doesn't suck on anything BUT his
tail!  He does love to knead soft blankets as well- but when he is relaxed
and about to fall asleep you'll hear the sucking start!  I thought there was
something wrong w/his tail to begin with until i realized what he was doing!
He's adorable and doesn't cause any trouble so I figure it's fine and maybe
he'll grow out of it, but how wierd!?!
