I was told after I got my Siamese kitten that he was too young for clumping
litter, so here I am, with his birthday in six days, soon making him a year
old. Does this mean he'll be okay for clumping litter at around this time?
Thanks in advance,

Yes, the concern with kittens is that they might eat the litter. So at one
year, he should be fine. Personally, I use Swheat Scoop which is a natural
clumping litter with no chemical additives to worry about.
Happy birthday to your kitty,
Lauren

Ok, so has anyone ever *actually* experienced this problem - the
kitten eating the litter then requiring medical attention?
As far as I can ascertain, it is an Old Cats' Tale or Urban Legend - I
have never actually read or heard of anyone having a problem - only "I
have heard..." stories.

A couple years ago Cat Fancy did a survey of 100 veterinarians across the U.S.
and not one said he/she had ever seen a medical problem cause by a cat
ingesting clumping litter.
The only documented case of a cat *suspected* of becoming ill from eating
litter that I have ever come across is the one you pretty much always see
quoted to "prove" that it happens:
http://www.catmom.com/marina/articles/hornfeldt.html
This site includes the article as well as criticism from a member vet and the
author's response. The author notes that he could not prove the toxicosis was
from the clumping litter, so that's why he titled the report "suspected
bentonite toxicosis."

We never did, either, and our volume was between 90-150 tickets a day.

Thanks, Yngver. Wasn't that Marina chick posting and reposting this
article in the cat ngs for awhile? I remember something like that
being vaguely annoying...

I believe so. Whenever the myth about clumping litter killing cats comes up,
someone generally posts that article--because that's pretty much all there is.

My kitten at the time would go into the clumping litter, and then it would
get all stuck in between the pads of his paws. He would try to licking it
off, and then there was a concern of it getting into his innards and doing
damage. So I took him off it. And that's the story.

Wheat clumping litter is safe for any age kitten. If they try to eat it,
it's perfetly safe. Been using it for years for all my cats.

How hard does that kind of litter clump? One of my cats digs the heck out
of the litter before she actually goes, and if the clumps aren't very hard
they come apart.

I have never, ever heard of a problem with clumping litter with
kittens, and have used the stuff for literally hundreds of kittens,
both at home and at the vet. So yes, I suspect your kitty will be
fine.

On the other hand, you have proven yourself to be an idiot.
