Cat Anal Gland Issues

Hi All,

I've posted on rec.pets.cats in the past, but finally have a news server
that carries rpch&b - hooray.  Hopefully this place has a lot less warring
going on over indoor/outdoor, to d*claw or not to d*claw, etc. :-)  Those
are the main reasons I stopped posting and reading over there.... but I
digress, I need a little help on fiber ...

My Max is an indoor, fixed, 1995 model Maine Coon mix who has been with me
since '96.  Just this past weekend he had his left anal gland burst (yuck) -
we had no idea something was wrong w/him - no scooting on the rug, no large
bump near his butt, etc.  The vet said I may not have noticed since it's
inside - but anyway . . . is there any way for me to add a little fiber to
his diet w/out making him fat?  He's a big boy at 17lbs, he eats Nutro's Max
Cat Lite formula - and not a ton of it - and gets the crunchy treats when
he's good - or when he demands, lol - you know how it is.  Occasionally he
gets some cooked, plain chicken but that's really about it.

Anyway - the vet thinks he's fat and I really can't imagine my kitty
weighing less, he's not like one of those cats that looks like a football
with head and a tail.  Maybe he could lose a pound but I don't see how.  The
vet expressed his very full gland (and taught my cat how to bite me, very
hard, <wink>) and gave me some meds to put in there once a day as it heals
(and some anti-biotics for myself) and I'm going to start bringing him to
the vet's every couple of months to get his glands 'expressed' - I'm sorry,
I have no desire to learn how - but what I'd ultimately like is to add a
little fiber, makes his stool a little harder and that way the glands will
express themselves like they are supposed to every time he takes a number 2
and I won't have to subject him to the indignation of gland expression on a
bi-monthly basis.

Hopefully he hasn't developed a taste for human flesh either >^..^<

Thanks
LeeAnne

Well, you might be able to bulk up his stool by adding pumpkin or
metamucil to his diet, but it wouldn't necessarily solve the problem.
Additionally, I'd be cautious about trying to increase the size of a
cat's stool unless I was very sure that the cat wasn't prone to
megacolon. For me, it's just simpler to have the vet express Jacob's
glands every time he goes in for his CRF bloodwork. I don't want to
learn to do it, either. <G>

Um. My goodness, you are new here.

Well, maybe I'll try harder not to react.

I couldn't help giggling at the reference to the "1995 model"

Dogs are more prone to anal gland issues, but it is not unheard of for cats
to have this problem as well  While increasing the fiber intake MIGHT help,
it doesn't mean it will.  If your boy doesn't mind the trip to the vet so
much, then just bring him in every once in a while to be expressed.  If he
does, it would be a good idea to bite the bullet, buy a whole bunch of latex
gloves and some KY and DIY

AHHHHHHH - I really don't want to get to know my kitty in that manner ;-)
Of course the cat minds the visit to the vet - don't they all?  He shall
survive though, he always does.

I think that I shall simply bring him in every couple of months and have
this done - I thought that maybe I could save him the indignation of
strangers messing around on that end - but he'll live.  If that is the best
way to do it vs. upping the fiber then that is what I'll do - I think the
vet said it's about 12 bucks to have it done, not that $ is an issue for the
kitty, but it's reasonable enough and I definitely don't want him to have to
deal with blown butt glands ~poor baby~

Thank you both for the advice

Can't blame you there; I surely wouldn't want Jacob associating me
with having a finger stuck in his butt. <G>

That's what I do. Make sure you have the vet with the smallest hands
do the expressing; your cat will appreciate it. ;-)

I take Shadow every other month or so for the shave (sanitary) and
squeeze. Vet tried to teach me, but not worth it. Yucky. Plus, it is
uncomfortable for him, and I'd rather be the one to comfort instead
of be the one to inflict. $15 at my vet, and very worth it. No office
visit charge, basically just like grooming charges since I get them
to trim his claws at the same time.

I totally agree. Some things it's better just to pay other people to do.
Besides, after the abscess ordeal with Frank, now everytime I pet him he acts
very suspect. Like I"m going to start messing with him.

Sticking a finger in your cat's butt being one of them. :-)

Then that is what I shall do, I'm glad to hear of others w/this same
situation - and yes, a bargain at about $12.00 per visit.
