I have a feral with reddish fur.  I heard that it is the result of a
vitamin deficiency, and it will turn gray with regular meals.  Has
anyone heard about that?

I think it will be quiet around here now.  So long.

Pretty kitty, John :)
I have never heard of a vitamin deficiency causing a cat's fur to be red.

Well, I see that you are serious. :-) Like Lauren, I've never heard
of this. However, my incredulity came from my thinking that you were
referring to an orange cat, not one that just has an orange tinge to
its fur. I thought you were kinda crazy for thinking that an orange
cat would change color with better nutrition. <G>

Why don't you experiment?  Let us know what happens.    MLB

Severe protein malnutrition can cause a reddish hair color in human
beings.  I've never heard of anything similar in cats.

True enough. I've lived in some areas where there were young black kids
around with the same sort of reddish shading in their hair. Malnutrition
issue. Since hair is comprised mostly of protien, being deficient in certain
protiens seems a plausible cause. Cat, human, or other - hair is protien....

From Vetinfo:

"There are some causes of reddish tinges developing in haircoats that
are serious. The most serious cause of this that I can remember offhand
is severe protein loss. This can occur with kidney failure, liver
failure or intestinal disease that leads to inability to absorb or to
retain protein. It can also happen as a side effect of some medications.
Hormonal disorders will sometimes cause hair color changes as well. More
common causes are food allergies, parasite infestation, bacterial
infections, fungal infections and anything else wrong with the skin that
will lead to the cat licking its fur. For some reason, the saliva seems
to make the hair color change to a reddish/orange tinge."

I looked at the photo you posted and  what I saw was extremely unusual
and IMO cause for concern. If this were a feral I was caring for, I
would take him to the vet ASAP and have a full blood workup done along
with a thorough check for skin issues. The list of things that could
cause reddish fur contains some pretty serious possibilities and I
wouldn't take any chances, especially considering the degree of redness
that was visible.

I would rather pay the costs of a vet visit and tests and find out it is
something simple to deal with, rather than do nothing and have a cat
that is possibly suffering from serious health issues.

Fascinating! I'll be curious to hear what happens with the cat in the
original post.

Wow.
I aim to learn at least one new thing a day.
I can go home now, I guess. *LOL*

Seriously, though, that's interesting. I've never heard of such a thing.
Thanks for posting it. I was thinking the OP was joking.
