ok, i know i've been wondering about my kitties strange behavior which
may be perfectly normal, but i wonder if kittens do need sugar because
she much prefers drinking iced tea out of my glass then her clean
water.  also, she is not drinking "properly", not with her tongue
sticking and forming a little cup that picks up the liquid.  she
sticks her chin into the water and kinda lets the water get into her
mouth and then licks it off.  i think i'b obsessing about her behavior
too much.

I don't know if they *need* sugar, but some cats certainly *like* it.
Other cats just prefer to drink out of glasses, or to drink whatever
*you* are drinking because *you* are drinking it.

Like a kid would? Interesting.

Probably, but that's not unusual. :-)

Let me amend my off-the-cuff remark in response to this- I do not
think you are obsessing too much. Given the other behaviors you've
mentioned, I think this cat needs very badly to be seen by a
veterinarian.

I think you love her, and for your own peace of mind need to have her seen
by a good vet, as Sherry and others have said.

I think giving any animal anything with sugar in it is a REALLY BAD idea.

I agree.  Tea also has caffeine, another no-no for cats.  Have you made an appt
with your vet yet?

I'd dump the tea and give the cat bottled water instead.

Tap water has a lot of things in it that we don't mind, but many cats
don't like. Chlorine is a bad offender. Try giving her pure bottled
water. If she drinks that, it's something in your tap she doesn't like.

Refined sugar is not a naturally occuring thing. Cats do not need
refined sugar any more than people do. Our bodies break down things like
carbs to make simple sugars for our bodies needs. I believe cats have a
similar process for most of their needs, though they do have some unique
requirements that are met by commercial kitten/cat food (i.e. taurine,
protein).

Your kitten is really very young. She may like a little KMR (feline milk
replacement) as a supplemental and healthy treat, too.
Take her to a vet for your own piece of mind - your other posts suggest
she may not be 100% healthy. Better safe than sorry.
