Travelling with three cats

Hi everyone,

We're going to be traveling across the country with three cats, two
neutered males about three years old, and an un-neutered male about
nine months old. One of the older cats only tolerates the younger one,
and the other older cat gets along okay with the young one. The two
older cats are fine together.

What's the best way to travel with them? I'm thinking of buying three
wire cages (wire, so they can see each other), and placing the older
cat that gets along with the other two between the other two. My wife
is thinking of putting the older cats together in a carrier, and the
young one alone in its own carrier.

Any thoughts on this? I don't know much about cat behavior, but I want
to make sure they're as comfortable as possible during the trip (three
or four days of solid driving).

Thanks for any help!

Hi Dave ,
Cat's tend to turn on each other when stressed so it would be to
have a carrier for each cat or take a spare one just in case. Wire
cages are good for ventilation, you could cover the tops with a towel
or something, so they don't feel too exposed.

Thanks Allison!

Do you have time to get teh youngest one neutered before you go?  That alone
might ease the stress between him and the other cat.

Be careful not to let them loose in the car or anywhere where they might get
loose on your trip.  Will they have litter boxes in their carriers?  Are they
good riders?  If you have time, you might want to take them for a few short
drives so they get acclimated.

Do you have pet-friendly motels you will be staying at along the way?

Best of luck to all of you.

Candace, your kitties are beautiful. Emily looks just like our cat
that passed over the RB in 2001. Thank you for sharing.

Thank you.  Emily went to the RB in July of 1999 and her son, Cory, this last
March, sadly.  Best of luck to you and your kitties on the trip.  Please be
careful with them.

Check the closure on the carrier OFTEN! Word to the wise from one who
didn't.

ive wondered about this myself.  my cats only know cars from going to the
vet and they hate it.  i couldnt imagine putting them on a plane (even using
the medical necessity route so we could carry them on).  the only thing i
could think of that would stress them the least was renting an RV so they
would have room to roam and it would feel like a mini-house.  pathetic i
know, caving in like that to my cats, but they are our children, nothing is
too good for them :).

Actually, we probably won't have the time or money to get him neutered
before leaving. We're actually moving across country, not just
traveling. My wife is checking out pet-friendly motels along our
route. Thanks everyone!
