hello,
i accidentally kicked the cat, and she hit her head on the metal frame
of our futon (i was getting up, and she thought i was heading for the
kitchen, as she always does, so i didn't see her when i took my first
step). I didn't think anything of it, since she seemed ok, but there
was quite a bit of blood coming from her mouth, and a small cut on her
head. the bleeding stopped after only a couple of minutes; i offered
her some treats, and she ate them all without any problem. there is
however, some noticeable swelling, and she is a bit more distant than
normal.
is there a way i can tell if she is in pain, to the point that i
should take her to the vet? if she eats, and wags her tail, is this a
sign that she is ok?
thanks in advance for any responses....

"Quite a bit of blood" coming from her mouth is an indication of
a severe injury. I'd recommend you take her in immediately. --

Sounds like she should have gone to the vet immediately.
>> was quite a bit of blood coming from her mouth
To me, this says internal injuries. When I took a class for first aid,
blood coming from the ears, eyes, or mouth were extremely bad signs.
>and she is a bit more distant than normal.
Sounds like a possible brain injury. If you haven't already, take her
now.
I would much rather waste some money and be relieved at the good news
than find out later I killed my cat because I waited too long.

Pain isn't the issue here. You should have taken her to the vet
immediately - please do, she might have a concussion.
When something like this happens, always call the vet *first* rather
than posting to a newsgroup...

I think it is generally difficult to say if the cat is in pain or not
since they are so incredibly tough and usually hide pain very well. I
think as a rule of thumb I would suggest that if the cat is bleeding
out of the mouth, ear or nose it might be a good idea to at least call
the vet to find out if a visit is necessary.

Get this cat to the vet immediately. Quite a bit of blood coming from her
mouth and swelling means your cat suffered a severe injury and this means it
must be treated.

Cats don't generally wag their tails. They move their tails in nervous
swishes when they're irritated, pissed, or in pain. A cat with a rapidly
moving tail, i.e. wagging, is usually not a happy cat. Cats aren't all
that obvious about pain and prefer to hide it if they can.
More useful advice, like taking her to the vet, has already been given.
She probably hurt her head and possibly broke some teeth and/or bit her
tongue. Depending on where you kicked her, she may have internal
injuries.
