Busy Kitty Update

Hi guys. No, the kitties aren't that busy, but I sure am. No day
off from work in several weeks and so tired that my world feels
almost surreal.  LOL  Luckily I don't have to drive to the office
while working around the clock, so the roads are safer.

Rhett had his yearly vet visit and he still hasn't had a recurrance
of the foot problem he had as recently as last year. It seemed
seasonal. I think it was related to Pro Plan dry food which I
stopped giving to any one. After his shot and we were driving home
I thought he was having a reaction to his shot so we turned around
to go back to the vet. He was mouth breathing, yowling, and then
laid his head down and I thought he was going to pass out.  Back at
the vets and he was fine. Vet said he succumbed to the stress of
the office visit and the warm car.  Back at home he was fine, so
she was right. He sure scared me. This big boy gained 1/2 pound and
is now 16 pounds. I don't see fat other than the belly swing. Tail
and neck dimensions seem ok to me.

A week later and I found a lump on Bonnie's (former feral) neck
with a scab, so I figured (hoped) abscess.  She wasn't acting ill,
and her appetite was ok, but I caught her sleeping and took her to
the kitty doctor. Dr said it was more like a bruise because the
skin under and around the lump were dark, and not quite an abcsess
because it wasn't directly under the skin and felt a little harder,
but to keep an eye on it.  She laughed at me when I asked for a
long acting antibiotic shot so I wouldn't have to give this wild
girl pills.  No such thing, at least no more long acting than a
day. I read about long acting AB shots here. Do they really exist?
I took home some ABs to give her and of course as of now I haven't
gotten a single one into her.  I even picked up some pill pockets
but she sniffs and moves on. She has a snotty nose, spring related
as it happens every year. I just keep the windows shut, run the
house fan and vaccum as much as I can. Bonnie even lost about 1/2
pound since last July. 12.8  down to 12.2.  She's a very small
framed cat so I expected slow loss.

Scarlett's extracted tooth from a month ago seems to have comforted
her and her appetite is great, though she is one of those who
follows me to the kitchen and begs when I'm making something, so
she prefers human over cat food. I don't indulge that often.

Shamrock is great. Though he is starting to pull out a lot of fur
in clumps, he doesn't have bumps yet that lead to the legions and
bleeding from his EGC. Spring seems to be when he is worse than
ever. I've been slack on giving him the Atopica even 2x per week
lately. Have to catch him at the right time between meals to keep
him from barfing it up.  But with his fur pulling, he's doing
plenty of furball barfing at the moment.

They all love watching the mice, and even their palace is growing
with plenty of climbing and hiding and chewing things.  :)

I hope you and yours are all well, and for those who've passed,
please accept our condolences.

Thanks for the update on the Clowder, Cheryl.

I seem to remember reading about longer lasting AB shots.  In fact, last
time I had a nasty sinus infection the doctor gave me a shot and told me it
would continue to work over the next week.  Sorry, I don't remember what it
was.  Maybe a google search would turn something up.  If no luck, then what
about liquid meds instead of a pill - I find those a lot easier to give (but
you have to learn the knack of putting in just the right spot in the cheek.
Is that an option with Bonnie (I know she's a ex feral so you're playing in
a whole 'nother ballgame)?

What was the Pro Plan doing to Rhett's foot???!

I'm glad Scarlett's tooth problem is gone - it's so sad to see a kitty in
pain and unable to eat well.

Also, I'm sorry to hear that Shamrock is having an EGC outbreak - that must
be frustrating to live with knowing there's not much you can do about it.

Hugs,

I know it's been a while since you wrote this. I'm just catching
up. My eyes are tired. Shamrock got a Depo shot today (first one in
one year) because he's pulling his fur out in huge clumps and
barfing hairballs on my bed while I'm on it. No lesions yet, but
with the rate of the fur pulling, it will be soon.

Bonnie ended up with two lumps and it was Rhett biting her neck in
a dominance display. I caught him. Today the lumps are down and the
scabs are hard so she's healing. Need to find a way to make him
quit biting the necks of everyone.

Pro Plan was the dry I was mixing with California Natural to make
it more cost effective, and everyone liked it. Rhett used to get
stinky infected feet and once I quit feeding Pro Plan, he hasn't
had an outbreak.

I'm so sorry to read about Hunter. He knew love in his final weeks.
Feel good that you are responsible for that.  hugs

No problem - I know how RL can get in the way of important stuff like
newsgroups!  ;>

Oh man, poor thing - he must feel miserable.  I hope the Depo works quickly
to relieve him.

Maybe putting a little lemon juice on the back of her neck?  I don't know -
you'd not want something that Bonnie was miserable having on her, but it
would have to be something that would discourage his biting.

Gee, you hear so much more now-a-days about food alergies in pets.  [Knock
wood], mine haven't had any so far.  They eat Fancy Feast canned with just a
tiny bit of Science Diet dry for snackies.  I tried taking away the dry and
feeding only canned, but they lost way too much weight on that diet (even
though they left food in their dishes), so I ended up adding the dry back
again.

Yeah, I'm still so sad about that - he was so darn young and had absolutely
no symptoms to indicate that anything was wrong (and he'd seen a vet 3 times
in those 5 weeks he was indoors without any problems found!).  It was such a
shock, not only him dying, but thinking for a while that it could be
something contagious that might kill the rest of my clowder was terrifying
(he was still quarantined, but I was envisioning devastating ariborn
viruses).  We're pretty sure now, after talking to my vet and my best friend
who is a nurse, that it was his heart - he probably had an embolism and
threw a clot into his lungs.  That's more common than you'd think - an
internet search found hundreds of such stories.

But, as you said, at least he died in a home having known love and a full
belly - better than if he hadn't wandered into our back yard three months
ago (a kitty haven with free food and a tall fence to keep out dogs) and
instead had died, starving or worse, alone on the street.

His grave is in our backyard next to Bandit and Percy and he will be
remembered with love for the rest of our lives.

Hugs,

CatNipped
