MIKE - 26 May 2004 14:22 GMT Tiger is a big cat - make that a HUGE cat. He weighed in at 23 pounds at his last vet visit. He likes to lay on his back with his feet sticking up. Is this a trait of Maine Coons?

Cherokee did...he was a moggie longhair but also a very big cat. http://members.aol.com/sriddles/cherokee.jpg

She stares all around and occasionally washes one of her mittens. She is also a tuxedo, with distinct bikini marks. I call it showing us her bikini. I think it is a sign of a very secure, happy cat.

Cherokee usually laid there in the smack middle of the floor, directly under the ceiling fan. We had to walk around him. As he got really old, sometimes I'd poke him, just to make sure he hadn't been dead all day and I was just stepping over him. No joke.

> poke him, just to make sure he hadn't been dead all day and I was just stepping > over him. No joke. LOL! So he had the "Zen" thing going that Buddha does. She stares wideeyed, and then after what appears to be a lot of thought, slowwwwwly brings a front foot up and washes it. Sometimes she stalls right in the middle of bringing it over and stays that way for a while.

My boy Coco does this and he is the most insecure cat I've ever known, besides the outside strays I've dealt with! (Coco is the one who ate the string, btw -- still ok so far!)
Anyway, he will do the usual lying on his back thing and just relax and look all around, but sometimes he lies down so that his front end is lying on his side and his back end is on his back, with his back legs open realy wide. Now that looks funny b/c it looks so deliberate! He's just a gray/brown tabby boy, a mutt from the street. I once had a cat who i'm sure was at least part Maine Coon and his favorite position what all stretched out on his back, and i've heard that's common for that breed.

I have a skinny cat, who does not.

The cutest is when he washes his tail in that position. He'll reach down and scoop it up so it's between his splayed legs. Then he holds the tip between his front paws while he washes it. When he gets the tail tip good and wet, he scrubs his face with the tip of the tail.

Non of my smaller cats (~12 lbs) I have ever had did it.
Sure looks funny :-)

Tracy - 27 May 2004 00:13 GMT Nope it's not entirely a big cat/small cat thing. My Callie barely breaks nine lbs and does it all the time and has since she was a kitten. She likes to go to sleep on her back while getting rubbed on her belly :>
Tiny as she is though and who knows, she may grow, she's totally got a bunch of Maine Coon in her and I suspect that is true of many domestic longhairs with the trait.
The tuxedo, by contrast, would never do such a thing. Her belly is private .....

Her belly is > private ..... My svelte tuxedo lays on his back frequently. The long haired bowling ball never does. I don't think she could get on her back. Tigger used to lay on her back a lot when she was younger (before arthritis). Guess some cats do and some don't regardless of their size.

I know it definitely picked up when the season turned to spring (not that its been a hot spring, but they are still doing all kinds of "hot weather" stuff. Like, Grant stopped sleeping on the bed with me at night (big sign of "summer" - he spends most the night looking out the window in the summer time. Early morning wake ups. I guess they have their own season clocks.)
Ann - 28 May 2004 02:08 GMT Jade,(the black Angora) rolls around on her back and shoots tufts of fur. Ok, I don't really see any fur shooting off of her, but when she gets up there's always a couple of thousand hairs in a ball on the carpet. She's not relaxing and sleeping like this, she rolls back and forth, usually in a walkway. Then I talk baby talk to her and say how cute she is and she does it more and mews like a baby kittie. Her front paws are bent, relaxed. She looks like a teddy bear, so cuddley but if you touch her belly when she's doing this, she'll bite your hand. Don't touch the belly. She doesn't draw blood, just warns you. She's kind of a hyper cat.
My tabby (Bonnie) likes to stretch out on her back when she's on a hard surface like a table or out on the concrete. Rolls right around and stretches. I think it just feels good. When she rolls on her back she looks so beautiful because her white chest and neck and paws show. Her colors are rust, brown and white.tiger/tabby.
I think its a happy action, I'll tell you why. When two years ago on Thanksgiving Jade went out and didn't come back for two days, she ROLLED and ROLLED around a lot, then got up and walked a few feet and rolled again. Very happy to be home. Maybe the scent things are on her back too?

He's an adoptee of the local No Kill shelter and our vet says he is at least half M.C. He does look like one. Anyway, he's about 17 lbs now. 1.5 yrs old. He loves laying on his back, but he allows his legs to just flop so he's spread totally eagle LOL He also does this funky thing of *sitting* against a wall, or door (he hates the furniture YAY lol) and he actually sits. Like he had a butt or something, so his back is straight up and down with the wall and his back legs stick out in front of him. His front legs hang down on his belly and he will sleep like this even. Some of the best pics I have of him are in these two positions cus we've never seen it before so of course we took a hundred pics of our amazing boy
:) I just love cats and their unique qualities :)

BTW there are a couple of him doing this, I believe, on our Webshots. One as a little kitten about a year ago. The problem is I forget how to access the page so others can see it. But I shall figure it out :)
