Mice and cats

Hi. I looked for a mouse or rodent newsgroup and there just are
none that are active, so forgive me posting here. I know there are
at least a few of you who either have them now, or once had mice
with cats.

I got the larger aquarium today and still waiting on the top. It is
HEAVY so I'm going to have a hard time moving the aquarium from the
guest room that the cats aren't allowed in, and then out to the
living room for socialization and entertainment. Can mice adjust to
living in two homes?  I could maintain each aquarium in its own
room and only have to carry them to clean them out. Would going
from one home to the other freak them out over and over or would
they adjust?

These girls are so quirky. I have so many questions to ask people
who have mice.  Like why do they move the bedding around all over
the place, including wads of it from one end of the aquarium all
the way to the other side just to deposit it in the food dish?
Boredom? Similarly, why do they take the bedding and stuff pieces
of it into the wooden chew toy that hangs from the screen top?  And
every time I fully change the bedding and wash out the aquarium,
they go right to work moving around the bedding to where they want
it to be, even if they leave uncovered parts of the aquarium that
they have to walk on?  Maybe they don't like walking on the stuff I
bought?  Its a paper based Carefresh brand.

So many questions and no one to ask.  LOL

Cheryl,

You are really too cool. You are a very cool person. You are always so
friendly and kind hearted.

This is all instinctual behavior on the mouses (spelling? mouses?
plural? LOL [mice] LOL) part and entirely normal. This is just what
they do... I have to confess, it has been a very long time since I
have kept any rodents... but they are fun :-)

I never really had mice, but I sure had a lot of gerbils! And
hamsters, too...

But gerbils dig constantly - similar to how mice like to make nests.
It is simply what they do. Gerbils are desert animals and they like to
burrow. Mice are not, but they like to make nests instead.

I used to make large areas for my gerbils to dig and burrow ---
because it just came so naturally for them... I am certain that making
nests is the same sort of thing for mice... Sort of a homing instinct
so to speak (true nesters at heart, hehehehe)?

Give them lots of toys to chew and lots of stuff to shred up because
that is just what they want to do... I used give mine all the empty
cardboard toilet paper rolls or the cardboard rolls from the paper
towels... stuff like that... they get hours of enjoyment from that
sort of thing.

They actually are very hard workers!!! They know what needs to be done
and they get the job done.

This year, in fact, is the first year I have had that I haven't found
a bunch of mice nests all over in my pole barn. What to do? I can't
lay out poison for them! Maybe my birds are keeping them at bay?
Usually I find plenty of storage spots and plenty of nests come spring
cleaning...

In any case, don't worry that is what they do ;-) They are fascinating
to watch.

Please do not hesitate to email me. I will help in any way I can.

Thanks ;-)

Aww, thanks. I'm calming down.  LOL

They sure are! They get right to redecorating when I change the
bedding. Very cute. Thanks for all the advice on this off topic
post. I really appreciate it. :)

I wonder why too. I'd hate to imagine it could be snakes! Eeeesh..

Thank you. Will do.

My only question is... Why do you feel you need two aquariums?

I don't understand that part...

I understand that if you were to start a breeding project, switching
cages WOULD be an issue to a brooding (correct word???) female... But
switching cages --- it might take a few days... but I suspect (not for
absolute sure) the "regulars" would get used to it.

BTW... did you get the tops of the aquariums figured out?

Thanks,
Melissa

I don't trust leaving the aquarium out in the living room where
the cats have access. But I also don't want to have to keep them
in the guest room all the time. So rather than have to carry the
tank in and out of there I'd rather just have to carry the mice, and
they stay in the guest room tank during the day and when I'm
sleeping, and in the living room when I'm home.
I know, lame.  LOL

No breeding!

I think so. It doesn't seem to support Rhett's weight as he's a
huge cat and he jumped on it and it made all sorts of noise like
tearing.

Here's a pic of their new bigger home as of tonight. It's taller
than the tank they came with so I'll have to look for ways to use
the height for climbing.

:))

I like the one of Shamrock (black/white kitty) looking at me
disgustingly that I let these rodents in the house.

They are both very cute kitties, and the mice aren't too bad
either ;-)

Mice like to be hidden when they sleep so them move as much loose material
into their nest as they can so they can burrow deep down inside when they
feel like nappies.  They move it constantly because they have the instinct
to - the best way to avoid predators is to not let your smell get very
strong in one place and make plenty of different hiding places.

I don't think two different cages will freak them out - mice *lurve* to
explore (they're the epitome of "gatherers"), so I think they'll rather
enjoy it.

Have fun with your widdle mousies!  ;>

Thanks CN. Posted a link to piccies to MC. Your explanation about
predators makes sense.

LOL! I just love all animals and wish a happy life for all of them.
If I can give a few a happy life, I'm happy.

I found a catproof solution to the top of the aquarium, and the
cats can still drool at the mice and lounge on it if they want. The
table has a bar that sits right on the edge, and is sloped slightly
for airflow, but not enough room for them to squeeze between the
aquarium and the table top, and it's too heavy for even Rhett to
move it. I need to clean up this table (used it downstairs - not
sure where I got it but it works for this).

The mice aren't bothered at all by drooling kitties watching them.
They frollic and run around on the wheel and even if a kitty bats
the glass they don't even flinch.  LOL
