I guess this is a typical American-based cat magazine, because
naturists (nudists) are common in Europe. In Scandinavian countries,
are they not more liberal about clothes-free environments, but males
and females of ALL ages have saunas together. This Steve Dale guy
should go to www.NetNude.com and learn something before dispensing
advice without doing research. He's JUST as prudish as Ann Landers was
and those idiots who took over her job.

Found on a pet question site (Steve Dale Pet World). Can this be
real?
Q: Our cat, Martha, loves our two children, Emily, 7 and Justin, who
is 14. Justin enjoys taking off all his clothes after school and walks
around completely naked. It's common in South Florida for children to
run around naked. I am concerned about the effect on Martha. Do cats
blush around naked boys? When Justin is fully clothed, the cat has no
problem letting him pet her. However, when he's naked, Martha becomes
shy. Justin is just not into clothes, so reasoning with him is out of
the question. But our concern is for our cat. Can you help? T. G.,
Boynton Beach, FL
A: Cats do not blush, or care if we're wearing clothes unless they
have a reason to care. It's rather curious that Martha the cat is
fearful of Justin when he has no clothes on. Stephanie LaFarge, senior
director of counseling at the American Society for the Prevention of
Cruelty to Animals in New York agrees. "I am concerned there could be
inappropriate contact with the cat, or that somehow this cat is at the
very least being threatened in some way by Justin when he's wearing no
clothes. There must be an explanation for his fearful response. The
scene you describe of a 14-year old boy running around with no
clothes, in general, and in front of his 7-year old sister, in
particular, is not conventional, and probably inappropriate. I don't
know that it's common for 14-year old boys to wear no clothes just
because it is Florida. Presumably, you're Justin's father, and you
wouldn't have written if you didn't sense something isn't right. Start
by having a conversation with the family pediatrician."

I agree, its not the boy's nudity that scares the cat, it must be some other
action associated with the nudity. It would be the same if the boy had a
squirt gun and wet the cat with it, eventually the cat would shy from anyone
holding the gun. If the boy is getting naked and masturbating with the cat,
the kid has problems. Just another reason not to de-claw house cats.....
The writer lets his bias slip through but that's typical of the air heads
seen on local TV news and talk shows these days. There a level of ignorance
in America that has sadly become the norm. It's a way of looking
intelligent by mocking or laughing at the unconventional aspects of human
existence. The irony is that most of these ignorant air heads truly believe
they are liberal and progressive, all the while advocating such things as
mandatory controls on all aspects of freedoms, in the name of safety, for
the children, and because it just might save one life, so its worth it.

Wow. You said that very well.
"There a level of ignorance in America that has sadly become the
norm. It's a way of looking intelligent by mocking or laughing at
the unconventional aspects of human existence." is especially true.

When my Duncan (long haired dog) was alive he would get bathed and brushed
every week and then in the summer we would have him cut very close. He would
come back from the groomer looking and smelling very different than the dog
that left. Tigger who usually got along well with Duncan would sit on the
counter and growl at him for a couple days. She just didn't recognize him.
Poor Duncan would try to play with her and got a warning swat on the nose
more than once. Luckily Tigger's warning swats were without claws out.
Perhaps it is as simple as that. If the boy usually interacts with the cat
when he has clothes on, she just may not realize it is the same person and if
he tried to pick her up when she didn't realize it was him, she got scared of
this strange person. Now she associates him not wearing clothes with fear.

I've had many cats since I was a kid, I'm 35 now. Knowing what cats are
like, I reckon that if there had been "inappropriate contact" with the cat,
there would be visible and painful wounding on the young man.. :-)
