I was in an accident in August and spent four days in the hospital.  A
helpful neighbor took care of my two 8-year old cats.  When I came back from
the hospital, my SO who lives 30 miles away, came to stay with me for two
weeks till I could take care of myself.

While my friend was here, my female cat started to defecate on a particular
spot in the living room ignoring her cat box in the laundry room that she
has used all her life.  When my friend left, the cat continued to cause the
problem, not daily, but occasionally .  This week, it has been at least once
a day.

I took her to the vet and had a complete work up including blood tests to
see if there was anything wrong.  The tests were negative.  The vet gave me
a pamphlet about this problem and it didn't help.  I took her to the vet
again for tests this month, and again, they were negative.

Up till now, I have just cleaned up after her and washed the rug she has
been using.  The main problem is that I am taking this personally.  I think
about taking her to a shelter, but I know that this is a death sentence.

Does anyone know what I can do?

Sit her on your lap, look  into her face and explain to her that this can
no longer be tolerated.   I am not saying this as a joke.  It is
surprising what they understand when you really "talk" to them.  Best
wishes.   MLB

I think it's another "if this does not stop I will get rid of the cat"
troll."

Otherwise, I cannot imagine why I would have him kill-filed.

I might be wrong. It happens. ;)

I was wrong. He emailed me, and seems sincere. I have no idea
why I cannot see your posts, guy.

Here's the thing: your cat has been through a lot, as have you from the
sound of it. She is still letting you know she is upset.

Don't talk about getting rid of her, help her.

I have a cat who expresses her displeasure with her bladder. If you
are  wondering which is worse, let me just say that poop is bad but
pee is the cat gift that just keeps on giving. Soaks through the nice
rug into the hardwood floor and ruins it. Leaves a scent that is so
hard to get rid of, and signals every cat to go pee there.

I broke her of it by moving her box, food, bedding and toys
to the utility room, where I kept her confined for days at a
time. I visited her and gave her lots of affection. She peed in
her box. I let her out, she peed on the rug. I confined her
again for a few days. Eventually, she stopped peeing anywhere
but in the box. It works.

Advice: do not come in to a cat group threatening to take a cat
that loves you and needs you to a shelter over inappropriate
elimination brought on by what the cat sees as trauma. It
pisses people off, because it is unfair and cruel to even think
of it. If you do this, please do not ever get another cat.

Who do you have killfiled?  I am in pain, my health is at risk.  A cat that
I have loved for almost 9 years is causing a major problem in my life.  I
need help.

Why would you even consider take the cat to a shelter over this? Unless your
cat has a serious hairball issue, it could be the cat has a urinary issue.
If they have a blockage then they'll throw up often and this does become a
life threatening situation which they must get treatment for. Another
possibility is the food. If they have allergies to the food you have them on
now then it might be time to change it.

I know the group doesn't know me.  I am a cat lover and have had many cats
over the years.  I have two now, Tommy and Bianca.

My problem is Bianca.  She is dropping three to five reminders of her
dissatisfaction on my living room carpet once or twice a day.   She started
this problem after my girlfriend moved in to take care of me for a two week
period in September 2007.  I have been cleaning up after Bianca on a regular
basis since .

Since  she started this protest. I have taken her to the vet three times to
make sure she is not sick.  Over the nine years I have had her, we  have
been to specialists about her diet and tried many prescriptions including
"Venison and Green Peas" for her skin problems.  She is now on R/D for
weight maintenance.

She never throws up or urinates outside the box.  .    Our relationship is
strained now and she will not come close during the day although she still
sleeps under my arm every night.

I am posting with this group in hopes that someone will have a useable
suggestion.  When I got these cats in 1999, they did not get along and I
posted here.  A friend in Montreal wrote to suggest bathing the kittens in
baby shampoo and putting vanilla extract between their ears to make them
think they were litter mates.  It worked.

Now as a last resort, I am posting a second request for help and hoping
someone will take me seriously.

Sherwin  first this is no joke tell the girlfriend not to give you the BS
she did or get out.  Once they do this you are going to lose now matter
what.  I told the now ex wife it would be the cats before her.

second  have you the place she is doing this professional cleaned or had the
carpet removed the padding might have the smell still in it

third have you tried feliway  or talked to your vet about possible
medication to help

fourth  have you talked to another vet

fifth have you tried adding a second box or trying a different litter brand

this sounds like a stress situation the furball can be picking up on your
girlfriends dislikes of it

Matthew thanks for your detailed approach.

The girlfriend never gave me any BS.  She left her job to care for me for
more than two weeks after I was in an accident and couldn't care for myself.
That is when Bianca started making her mess.  The girlfriend is a keeper and
I would give up the cat if she wanted me to.

> second  have you the place she is doing this professional cleaned or had
> the carpet removed the padding might have the smell still in it

I had the original oriental carpet removed and professionally cleaned.  The
first day it was returned the cat messed on it again.
============================================================================
> third have you tried feliway  or talked to your vet about possible
> medication to help

The first thing I tried was Feliway and it didn't help.  The vet suggested a
tranquilizer, we had it formulated to taste like tuna.  Bianca refused to
let me give it to her and would not eat food when even the smallest amount
was added.  She has always resisted any medication when she was sick.  My
next door neighbor came over to help me administer the medicine and it was a
struggle.  The cat ran under the bed and we had to drag her out.   Bianca
spit out most of the liquid.   I think the stress of forcing medicine on her
is worse than any illness.
================================================================
> fourth  have you talked to another vet

I have messages to Colorado and Texas Vet Schools requesting comments
================================================================
> fifth have you tried adding a second box or trying a different litter
> brand

I put a clean box next to where she was messing and she still went on the
carpet.  I have found that the same brands of litter change over timne.
Tidy Cats packages two different litters from different plants in the same
packaging.  This is not a litter problem.  Bianca uses the litter box for
all urine and most of her feaces.  She saves a small amouont to make her
statement on the rug.
==============================================================
> this sounds like a stress situation the furball can be picking up on your
> girlfriends dislikes of it

The cat does it when the girlfriend is not here and has not been here for
days.  The girlfriend loves my other cat and has no problem with Bianca
except for this current behavior.
==================================================================

Thanks for your suggestions.  I appreciate your detailed approach.  I know
it is a complicated problem.   I was just hoping that someone would have a
solution.

If your girlfriend told you to jump out of an airplane with no parachute
would you do it? If your girlfriend doesn't like the cat then the cat is
picking up on this and whenever you stress they feel it. Why are you going
to vet schools to consult as second opinions when you should be going to a
licensed vet for a second opinion? Ask around if you can't find a good one.

If the cat is urinating or throwing up in places they shouldn't be then
there is obviously something medical that may be going on. A change in diet
may also need to be required as the cat could have a food allergy. What kind
of food are you giving her? BTW, why not put in tile flooring instead of
carpet? It's much easier to clean up the mess.
