Well, my boy ate the 2 foot string a full 5 days ago now, and so far,
so string in his poop and no signs of illness or distress either. He's
eating, pooping, and acting normally.

Hopefully, the string as dissolved in his system, or it balled itself
up so tiney that it passed in one of his smaller poops that i didn't
cut through to examine. I hope the danger is over!
thanks for everyone's advice . will post again if there's a turn for
the worse or a more definite 'outcome'.

I don't know if you are serious, so I may be falling for a troll here, but:

String does NOT dissolve!  You really need to get this cat x-rayed and see
if it is binding up his bowels.  If he shows symptoms, he's in critical
distress and may not survive even if promptly rushed to the vet.  AND it
will then cost you a fortune if you choose to save him.

Not a troll. I posted about this when it first happened this past
monday. As i said then, the vet said the options were to do surgery
immediately and remove the string, or to wait and see if he passes it.
I asked about what to do if he doesn't pass it but is acting normally,
and she said if we never see the string pass out, then he's either
thrown it up somewhere in the house where I can't find it (didn't
happen) or the string dissoved in his system. It was piece of
all-cotton string, not poly string or heavy twine, so i'm hoping it's
either broken up and come out is small pieces i haven't caught in his
poop (though I've been looking vigilantly) or it came out compressed
in a ball in one of his smaller turds, or it's dissolved. He's eating
and pooping fine, so there doesnt' seem to be any blockage. I am going
to call the vet monday morning, which will be one full week on, and
see if she suggests any further action, like an x-ray, but she seemed
to think that if he showed no symptoms, then the string is not causing
a problem.

My cat ate string and I didn't realize it, saw a "worm" hanging out of her
put and started to pull it out (and pull it and pull it)--luckily I did it
gently because I could have really harmed her if I had done it too
fast....hopefully you'll see something in poop soon of something.   I agree
that I don't think the string would totally dissolve...

Actually, I think it depends on the string. Something like a nylon string will
stay intact forever. But cotton, hemp, etc. could break down and basically
become more fibre in their diet. I'm not diminishing the potential seriousness
of string eating. But if the cat had to eat a string, he picked one of the better
materials to consume.

Yeah, I hope so. It was actually a thread that came loose from the
edge of an all-cotton throw i keep on his chair. Pretty soft, and more
yarn-like than string-like.

I'm still watching him closely. I thought I found some thread in his
poop two days ago, but it looked more like a thin blade of grass,
which means it came out my other cat, who loooooves grass everyday.

Oh, I DO hope the string dissolved. I've never heard of that, but
there's an awful lot I've never heard of.  :)

I'm glad he's doing all right.

Okay, well keep us posted.  I doubt the string dissolved, at least not so
soon.

Of course I don't look busy,
I did it right the first time.
